15 Statements Regarding Instrumental MusicThe first organ, that was introduced into the worship of any group claiming to be Christians, was in 670 AD. (That, of course, was 640 years after the church was established). It was introduced by Pope Vatalion I. It threatened the unity of the church. Eight hundred years after Christ the organ was re-introduced into the Catholic worship over some opposition. The Greek Catholic church refuses it and still rejects it. They do not use it today.

16 Statements Regarding Instrumental MusicMartin Luther: “The organ in the worship of God is an ensign to Baal.” John Calvin: The originator of the Presbyterian church, and author of the Calvinistic Creed, said of the organ in Worship: “It is no more suitable than the burning of incense, the lighting up of tapers or revival of the other shadows of the law. The Catholics foolishly borrowed it from the Jews.” When John Wesley, founder of Methodism, was asked about the use of the organ, he said, “I have no objection to the organ in our chapels provided it is neither seen nor heard.”

17 Statements Regarding Instrumental MusicAdam Clark: “I am an old man and an old minister, and I here declare that I have never known instrumental music to be productive of any good in the worship of God, and have reason to believe that it has been productive of much evil. Music as a science I esteem and admire, but instruments of music in the house of God I abominate and abhor. This is the abuse of music, and I here register my protest against all such corruptions in the worship of that Infinite Spirit who requires His followers to worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

18 Statements Regarding Instrumental MusicWhen Charles Haddon Spurgeon, who preached to 10,000 people every Sunday in London, England was asked why he did not use the organ in worship, he gave I Corinthians 14:15 as his answer: “I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also,” and remarked, “I would as soon pray to God with machinery as to sing to God with machinery.”

Among Churches of ChristStatements Regarding Instrumental Music Among Churches of Christ In his book, Search for the Ancient Order, Volume I, pages , by Earl Irvin West we read: Midway, KY “Shortly afterwards, someone brought in a melodeon to be used in getting the right pitch. Before long, one of the sisters was accompanying the singing with her playing on the melodeon. The group observed that the effect of the use of the melodeon was good on the singing, and so it was decided to try to use the instrument on the Lord's Day worship. “The church at Midway (KY) is the first congregation on record to use the instrument. It is not entirely accurate, however, to say that it was the first congregation among the pioneers to do so.”

Among Churches of Christ20 Statements Regarding Instrumental Music Among Churches of Christ “In 1864 the question was renewed, and this time it was raised in the Millennial Harbinger. Early that year a brother, signing his name ‘Ancient Order,’ sent W. K. Pendleton the following question: “Will you inform me whether it is in accordance with the Scriptures to use in the churches organ or other instrumental music connected with the worship?” Pendleton Replied: “With respect to instrumental music, I presume that no one at all acquainted with ecclesiastical history will pretend to claim for its introduction in the church any pretence of primitive authority or warrant. . .”

Among Churches of ChristStatements Regarding Instrumental Music Among Churches of Christ L. L. Pinkerton: “So far as known to me, or, I presume, to you, I am the only 'preacher' in Kentucky of our brotherhood who has publicly advocated the propriety of employing instrumental music in some churches, and that the church of God in Midway is the only church that has yet made a decided effort to introduce it.” “The introduction of the instrument owed its inception to the deplorable singing the congregation did. This singing had degenerated into screeching and brawling that would, as Pinkerton said, ‘scare even the rats from worship’."

Among Churches of ChristStatements Regarding Instrumental Music Among Churches of Christ Alexander Campbell replied: “But I presume, to all spiritually-minded Christians such aids would be as a cow bell in a concert.” Moses E. Lard said: “. . . what defense can be urged for the introduction into some of our congregations of instrumental music? The answer which thunders into my ear from every page of the New Testament, is none. Did Christ ever appoint it? did the apostles ever sanction it? or did any one of the primitive churches ever use it? Never.

23 Statements Regarding Instrumental Music“In what light then must we view him who attempts to introduce it into the churches of Christ of the present day? I answer, as an insulter of the authority of Christ and as a defiant and impious innovator in the simplicity and purity of the ancient worship.”
