2  There is more than one past tense in Spanish.  The preterite tense is for completed, simple actions in the past (I ate).  The imperfect tense is for continuous actions in the past (I was eating).

3 A) Simple past is expressed  Julieta wrote the letter.  We ate Subway for lunch.  It rained hard on our way home.  President Roosevelt had polio. B) Completed action (done-not interrupted or repeated)  The bus arrived late to the school.  Pilar & Ignacio earned the same score.  It snowed more in Boston than in Detroit in 2015.

4 C) You know when/for how long/ how many times something took place  Diego lived in Maine in 1988.  We were lost on the mountain for three days.  Carlita ran an 8 minute mile.  I saw Pitbull 4 times. D) Interrupted an ongoing event (imperfecto)  The door slammed shut while we were testing.  It was 6:30 when I woke up.  During the movie I fell asleep.

5  Drop the -ar/-er/-ir from the infinitive.  Add the pretérito ending: -ar verbs -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -astais, -aron -er/-ir verbs -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron

6  Hablar drop the –ar: habl  Add the endings to agree with the subjects: hablé hablamos hablastehablastais habló hablaron

7  Comer drop the –er: com  Add the endings to agree with the subjects: comícomimos comistecomisteis comiócomieron

8  Elegir drop the –ir: eleg  Add the endings to agree with the subjects: elegíelegimos elegisteelegisteis elegióelegieron

9 Contar: Coser:Vivir: Escribe los 3 verbos en las 5 formas (Yo, Tú, Usted, Nosotras, Ellas) del pretérito.

10  There are MANY irregulars   There are 3 types: › simply irregular › multiple vowels › spelling changes in YO subject only

11 Infinitives that are simply irregular...  All these irregulars are in the subject order: Yo, Tú, Él/Ella/Usted, Nosotros/Nosotras, Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes.  Write in the forms clearly with the infinitive definition that is supplied as well.

18 Infinitives with spelling changes in YO subject only...  Three types of verb endings have a spelling change in the YO form only.  The types are: › -car › -gar › -zar

19 Infinitives with spelling changes in YO subject only...  -car-qué › buscar – Yo busqué  -gar -gué › jugar – Yo jugué  -zar-cé › empezar – Yo empecé
