7 What is RAMADAN?

8 Ramadan is the 9 th month of the Islamic calendar.The month is either 29 or 30 days depending upon the sighting of the new moon (crescent). Ramadan is an Arabic word that means heat and thirst.

9 THE MONTH OF QURAN Prophet Muhammad received the first revelation from Allah in the month of Ramadan, thus Ramadan is said to be the holy month of the year.

12 THE MONTH OF LAYLAT-UL-QADRIn a hadith the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “…To Allah belongs a night in it, which is better than a thousand months. Whosoever is prevented from its good, then he has been deprived.” (Taken from a hadeeth reported by Ahmad and An-Nasaa'ee)

13 THE MONTH OF OBEDIENCE During Ramadan Allah inspires people to do good deeds that lead to Jannah and to avoid sins that lead to Hellfire. In a hadith reported by Bukhari & Muslim, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “When Ramadan comes the gates of Heaven are open, the gates of the Hellfire are closed and the devils are chained.”

25 1. TAQWA: PIETY/GOD CONSCIOUSNESSPiety/God Consciousness, in general, is to willingly obey God’s orders and avoid His prohibitions.

26 TAQWA: THE RESULT OF FASTING“Observing al-sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain Taqwa (become pious).” [al-Baqarah 2:183]

SIYAM BRINGS GREAT REWARDSProphet Muhammad (PBUH) proclaimed the reward of fasting: “Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving ten times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, ‘Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.’ (Bukhari) For the fasting person there are two times of joy a time when he breaks his fast and a time when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk.”

Fasting has also been used in cases of diabetes and obesity. It is a cleansing process and a physiologic or functional rest which prepares the body for future correct living

Whether it’s violence, addiction, gambling, infidelity or pre-marital sex – they are all a result of succumbing to desires and a lack of self-control. The month of Ramadan provides this training in self-control. Aside from gaining will power and the ability to control desires, fasting instills within us a deep feeling of gratitude along with patience.

36 SOCIAL BENIFITS Month of compassion for the less privileged.Encourages the wealthy to help the less-fortunate. Iftar dinners breaks down the barriers between the different people of society and brings a sense of harmony and togetherness.

51 SIGHTING OF THE MOON The months in the Lunar calendar is either 29 or 30 days depending upon the sighting of the new moon (crescent). If the crescent is not sighted, Muslims wait until 30 days of Sha’ban are completed, then they start fasting the month of Ramadan.

52 Fasting hours start from sunrise and end at sunset.During fasting a Muslim is not allowed to eat, drink, smoke, enjoy intimate relations with ones spouse or use abusive language.

53 OBLIGATORY ACTIONS OF FASTINGThe “Niyyah” intention to fast “Imsaak” Abstaining from eating, drinking and mating during the day

54 “Niyyah” (Intention) is very importantIf fasting is done without sincere intention then the person does not gain the spiritual benefit of fasting. According to the majority of the scholars it is preferable to make the intention the night before, but if a person forgot to do that, he/she should do it before the Fajr time.

55 RECOMMENDED ACTIONS OF FASTINGFollowing actions are recommended by the Prophet which, if done bring great reward for the person:

56 TAKING THE “SUHOOR” & DELAYING IT TO A LITTLE BEFORE THE FAJR ADHANSuhoor is a light meal before the dawn prayer. Recommended to delay Suhoor until just before Fajr.

57 HASTENING TO BREAK THE FAST AT MAGHRIBTo hasten the breaking of the fast (at the azan of Maghrib) is the Sunnah of the Messenger (S) [Bukhaaree and Muslim]

58 BREAKING THE FAST WITH DATESIt is the Sunnah to break fast with dates and water. [Ahmad and Abu Dawood] 

59 THE TIME OF ANSWERING OF DU’AASThe supplication (duaa) of the fasting person is not rejected [Tirmidhee, Ibn Majah and Ibn Hibbaan]

60 DU’AA OF OPENING THE FASTAllahumma Laka Sumtu wa ‘Alaa Rizqika Aftartu, thahabath Thama’u wab tallatil ‘Urooqu wa thabatal ajru In Shaa’ Allah O Allah I fasted for You alone, and broke my fast eating what You have given me. Thirst is over, my flesh is watered, and my reward for fasting is approved by the will of Allah

61 INCREASE RECITATION OF QURANQuran gives peace to the heart Allah says : Those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah], and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.   (Qur ‘an 13: 28)

62 EASY WAY TO COMPLETE THE QURAN IN ONE MONTHAll you have to do is to read around 4.5 pages after each Fard prayer

63 Who is obliged to fast? Fasting is an obligation on every adult, sane, Muslim who is able to fast.

67 DO NOT Play music at any time or anywhere.Watch immoral and indecent programs. Waste your time chatting with friends or surfing the net. Get angry.

68 DO NOT Drink or eat. Swear or use bad language. Fight with anyone

69 DO Perform prayers on timeTry to complete reading the whole Quran within the month Understand the Quran and implement it in your life. Increase your supplications

70 DO Be considerate to those that are fasting.Dress according to the Islamic manner (cover your ‘Awrah always but more so in Ramadan). Be generous and charitable. Be sensitive at the bad breath from those who are fasting. forgive people for their faults.

71 HALITOSIS – BAD BREATH Halitosis - an unpleasant odor exhaled through the mouth.  Bad breath is worst when there is little or no saliva flow. That is why bad breath increases when we fast. It is recommended for the fasting person to use miswāk.

88 Ask Allah to enable you to reach Ramadan and to get the most out of it.Intend to fast every day with Iman and pure intention Read the whole Qur'an in the month. Have Suhoor . Make Du'a during the fast and before opening it. Give Sadaqah and be good to people. Go for Umrah (if you are able to).

89 Avoid lying, backbiting, cheating, getting angry.Don’t over eat at Suhoor and at/after Iftar. Continuously ask Allah for forgiveness. Pray all the obligatory prayers. Pray At-Tarawih. Feed the poor and invite others for Iftar. Try harder the last ten nights.
