2 Biography:-Harishankar ParsaiHarishankar parsai was born in august 22,1922 in Madhya Pradesh, India. He was a noted satirist and humorist of modern Hindi literature and he is also known for his simple and direct style. He completed his M.A in English from Nagpur university. After completing his graduation he took writing as a full time career. He won “sahitya akademi” award in The great satirist left this world on aug 10,1995 in Jabalpur.

3 A TEN DAY FAST The story is strong criticism of the working democracy in a country like India. Here public opinion or the voice of the public carries weight. The most ignorant and illiterate public is capable to make laws. The story also put a spotlight on the true face of democracy as well as religion of India. The story is about a ten day fast of a person who wants to capture another man’s wife. The demand is fantastic as well as weird. Or we can say such kind of demand seems very funny in today’s world.

5 CHARACTERSTICS OF THE STORY Democracy:- The story “A Ten Day Fast” give a focus on the Democracy on the country like India. A fool Brahmin named ‘Bannu’ who loved another person's women called ‘Savitri’, when he was unable to get Savitri he started “A ten day fast”, in between the fast his health became very critical. The president of brahmin sabha issued a statement that he wanted brahmin Bannu’s life to be saved at any cost. Because of democracy and voice of the people’s Bannu’s life saved. The brahmin sabha president made a deal with Bannu to campaign on his behalf in the next general election. He also offered a lot of money to Bannu for this work.

6 Action in story Brahmin bannu who loves to an already married lady called Savitri, after many tries when he was unable to get Savitri, he met to a person who advise him to have a fast of ten days and try to impress the peoples. When the voice of the people will be with him Govt. will listen him and try to solve his problem. When Bannu was without food for five days his situation became very critical, public opinion began to turn in favour of him. The very next day a news publish in the newspaper that his condition is critical. It was feared that he would die. Several statements in newspapers that Bannu’s life must be saved. People were doing prayers in temples to save his life. People stoned in police stations and also burned a bus. At last Bannu’s life have been saved. Savitri tried to commit suicide…..

7 ….. She also saved. After that ‘radhika babu’ husband of Savitri sent a feeler that savitri should tie a “Rakhi” on Bannu’s wrist. But such an offer was rejected by Bannu. Role of goondas:- Baba sankidas hired four goondas to create chaos and other situation. These goondas threw rocks or stones on kayastha homes and then on the houses of Brahmins. The caste war was a handy thing to attract the attention of the government. It was mean to bring some support to bannu’s case and to make it a burning issue.

8 Cooperation:- The public , people like baba sankidas , The press, The politicians, The gangsters , the castiest leaders supports to bannu. Every supporting person or agency has his own axe to grind. The political leaders support even wrong causes for cheap publicity. The press supports to bannu because Press has to sale their news. The caste leaders supports to bannu because they plan to contest elections. Every man that is supporting to bannu has it’s own gain for supporting.

He convinced him that the fast was most potent weapon to bend the parliament or the government. He introduced bannu to baba. He was a complete mentor, guide, helper for bannu. He was privy to baba’s strategy to hire goondas so as to create trouble.

10 AIM :- A ten day fast The main aim of this satire is that bannu can get Ridhika Babu’s wife. Because bannu say’s that “I am as only one half. My another half is in Savitri. Because the soul says “Bring the two halves together and make them one”. Bannu main aim is to get savitri so he sit on “A ten day fast” .
