Lee Suke Kyu Ph.D. SCIENCE WITHOUT BORDERSVICE PRESIDENT OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Good morning ladies and gentlemen, my name is S.K. Lee, I am the Vice President of International Affairs at 성균관 University (SKKU).

Today I would like to briefly speak about the Science without Borders at SKKU.

Present - Future I will start by explaining about the current status of the program.

Leading SwB into Korea SKKU was one of the pioneers of Science without Borders in Korea. On our Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Seoul we hosted the official launch of Science without Borders Korea in the Fall of 2012. Here you see the Brazilian students posing for a group picture in front of 명륜당, SKKU’s first lecture hall which was built more than 600 years ago.

Rising Enrolment Starting with a pilot group of 5 students in the 2012 Spring Semester, enrolment of Science without Borders students at SKKU has been rapidly increasing. For the next semester, we are expecting a record number of 31 Brazilian students here at SKKU.

81% 6 18 Academic Excellence COURSES CREDITS GRADE AVERAGE AVERAGEThe academic performance of Brazilian students at SKKU has been very strong. On average, despite a heavy course load, the Science without Borders students manage to earn good grades. In fact, their academic performance is better than the performance of many Korean students. GRADE COURSES CREDITS 81% 6 18 AVERAGE AVERAGE AVERAGE

Beyond Expectations Academics Beyond 30% English Language courses100% PhD Faculty from global top 200 universities Collaboration with Industry Beyond English Enrichment Survival Korean Internships The success in terms of enrolment and academics is due to SKKU’s ability to go beyond expectations. In terms of academics, SKKU offers many courses in English. These courses are all taught by world class faculty. And students also benefit from SKKU professor’s extensive collaboration with industry. But SKKU wants to go beyond expectations. So we are now also offering an English Enrichment course and Survival Korean course to help students adjust to their academic and social life at SKKU. Furthermore, thanks to our professor’s strong contacts with industry, Science without Borders are also finding internships at some of Korea’s leading corporations such as 현대 Motors, 삼성, SK Energy and Posco.

Listening to and meeting SwB Students’ NeedsStudent Care Basics: Orientation & Counseling Excursions: Culture, Industry and Nature Joining the SKKU Family: Sports Festival & Global Food Festival Pro-Active Response to Solving Problems In addition to academics, SKKU also has an excellent student care system. We provide the basics such as an orientation and student counseling and throughout the semester there are excursions to cultural and natural sites and industry visits. To make sure Science without Borders students really become part of the SKKU Community we organize a Sports Festival and Global Food Festival in which Brazilian students actively participate. But in general, our philosophy to student care is to pro-actively respond to the problems students may have, and to listen to students’ needs. This simple approach has made SKKU the #1 university for Science without Borders students in Korea. Listening to and meeting SwB Students’ Needs

Present - Future However SKKU is working to further improve the Science without Borders experience. I will now discuss some of our new initiatives.

Pathways A Life-Changing Year at SKKU! International SemesterLanguage Training (English & Korean) First Semester Internship (Lab or Industry) First, we are working to develop pathways. Students can arrive in Korea in late June and join SKKU’s International Summer Semester with 1,600 students from Korea and around the world. They can then spend the month of august to improve their language skills before starting the first semester. The winter break in January and February can be used to do an internship at a lab at SKKU or at a local company, before starting the second semester. Through these pathways we aim to deliver a life-changing year at SKKU. Second Semester A Life-Changing Year at SKKU!

Certificate Program Customized Curriculum that meets SwB students’ needs English 100% Academic Mentorship to guide and encourage Connection to Industry or Lab for internship/research at SKKU, Samsung, etc. We are also working on creating a certificate program. Right now, we offer many courses in English, but not always as a coherent curriculum. The certificate programs would not only include a customized curriculum, taught 100% in English, but also academic mentorship for students. Through this mentorship we want to ensure a connection with industry and research as well, thus providing a well-rounded academic experience for every Science without Borders student at SKKU.

Ph.D. Mobility 4 4 to 24 6 to 24 SANDWICH PH.D. POST-DOC FULL PH.D.Finally there is the option of Ph.D. Mobility. It is possible to spend between 4 months and 4 years at SKKU while doing Ph.D. or post-doc research. We are now working to create a system that connects prospective Science without Borders students to SKKU faculty. In the coming years we hope to attract many excellent Brazilian graduate students to SKKU to conduct world class research. FULL PH.D. SANDWICH PH.D. POST-DOC 4 4 to 24 6 to 24 YEARS MONTHS JOINT SUPERVISION MONTHS

Thank You! Thank you very much for your attention. We very much look forward to receiving Science without Borders students from your university here at SKKU!
