2 AFFIRMATIVE TÚ (INFORMAL) COMMANDS

3 In both English and Spanish… Affirmative commands are used to tell someone to do something! Use them with friends or family. Study the lesson! = ¡Estudia la lección! Learn Spanish! = ¡Aprende español! Write the letter! = ¡Escribe la carta! *

4 A FEW THINGS… In the USA, You will NOT use these commands with someone you’d use the Usted form with. It can be considered disrespectful. In Spanish-speaking countries, it is more common to use commands for simple tasks. If said politely, it is a direct statement, and not considered rude.

5 Here’s how. EXPLANATION: Regular affirmative tú commands use the él/ella/usted (third person singular) form in the present tense. Examples: InfinitivePresent TenseAffirmative Tú Command estudiar=? hablar=? estudia habla ¡Estudia! ¡Habla! aprender=? correr=? aprende corre ¡Aprende! ¡Corre! escribir=? Subir=? escribe sube ¡Escribe! ¡Sube!

7 Affirmative Tú Commands  Some verbs have irregular affirmative tú commands.  To form many of these commands, take the yo form of the present tense and drop the -go:

9 Tener (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Tengo  Command form?  Ten

10 Decir (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Digo  Command form?  Di

12 Venir (Infinitive)  Yo form?  Vengo  Command form?  Ven

13 IRREGULARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Hacer, Ser, and Ir have irregular tú command forms that must be memorized: Hacer=haz Ser=sé IR=ve
