40 Teaching with Music A prominent aspect of the class was Latin American music. I have never enjoyed music and this class taught me how to appreciate and learn from it. It was interesting to listen to music that was from cultures all over the [region]. Each artist conveyed … thoughts and ideas quite well through musical art. Listening to each song taught me more about the Latin American culture than any book would. The songs focused upon political, economic, and environmental issues that arose in the musicians’ cultures. For example, one song writer described the drought that plagued his area, while another sang of all the tributaries on the Amazon. Overall, I feel I learned a lot about Latin America from listening to their music. ~~Ashley, 2005

41 Teaching with Music The most remarkable experience regarding the introduction of music in this class was the CD cover which had a picture showing the electrical wiring on a utility pole [in Rio]. I was amazed that the inhabitants were able to receive electricity under those conditions. The music reminds me of my childhood growing up in a barrio on the west side of San Antonio, Texas. The rhythms and flavor of the music of my youth. I wanted to go home and visit my mother all semester. ~~Laurie, 2005
