4 Rembrandt had a deep knowledge of classical iconography, and in his paintings and prints used freely interpret it to suit their own experience. Thus, in the depiction of a biblical scene Rembrandt used to combine their own knowledge of the text with his particular concept of classical composition and anecdotal observations of the Jewish population of Ámsterdam.3 By empathy with that portrayed the human condition, Rembrandt has been considered "one of the great prophets of civilization."

5 In 1635 the young couple moved into their new house, located in the elegant Nieuwe Doelenstraat. In 1639 they were again moved to Jodenbreestraat in the thriving Jewish quarter, further caro. Actually, Rembrandt could have amply paid the floor, but apparently their level of expenditure always remained balanced with their income level, and may have made some investments little fortunate. However, the Jewish presence in the neighborhood gave him a chance to find faces and figures well suited for scenes from the Old Testament then began paint. Although initial bonanza economic, with the passage of time the couple went through numerous setbacks: and his son Rumbartus died two months after his birth in 1635 and their daughter Cornelia died at three weeks of age in 1638. In 1640 the couple had a second daughter, also named Cornelia, and died after a month. Only their fourth child, Titus van Rijn (born in 1641) reached maturity. Saskia died in 1642, shortly after the birth of Titus, probably from tuberculosis.
