Professional Reminders: Students with Disabilities in GPE12/16/2017 Some students (with IEPs), individual learning needs are met through the GPE curriculum while in GPE. Satisfying state physical education standards, which is part of the GE curriculum in GPE, should be documented in the student’s IEP including: Present level of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP) in physical education, AND Goals for physical education consistent with the grade level content expectations for the GPE program. Schools must provide supports and accommodations in GE setting to permit these students to participate, whenever possible. They are in YOUR class! LRE GE curriculum Must document the amount of time in and out of LRE settings. One of my questions to classroom teacher and staff: “Have you exposed your student to the GPE setting, yet?” If no, a discussion follows.

Professional Reminders: Students Requiring APESome students with disabilities, however, cannot be included in the GPE curriculum without modifications and/or supports. For these students, APE services delivered in the LRE are required and should be specified in the student’s IEP [34 CFR (c)]. This requires determination of: eligibility for APE services; the least restrictive environment where the student would receive APE services; and the APE goals appropriate for the student. So now what tools will from today will help you meet the requirements of all that you are to do?

CAPE, APENS, NCPEID …OH MY!So…How can I become a certified adapted physical educator?

Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE)ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION NATIONAL STANDARDS PROCESS

12/16/2017 APENS APENS Project Purpose: was to ensure that physical education instruction for students with disabilities be provided by qualified physical education instructors – within every school district in the country. The purpose was designed to be achieved by addressing two goals: Develop national standards for the field of adapted physical education, and Develop a national certification examination to measure knowledge of the standards. Action Seminar in the Spring of 1991 National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPERID) National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) Special Olympics International This conference had two goals: Identify the barriers that were preventing full provision of appropriate physical education services to individuals with disabilities Establish an action agenda for addressing and resolving these problems Although numerous barriers were identified by the group, the most significant for state education leaders were that they did not know how to define adapted physical education, they did not know how individuals with disabilities could benefit from appropriate physical education services (to include APE) or what competencies teachers needed to deliver appropriate physical education services to students with disabilities. In response to this need, it was recommended that the NCPERID develop professional standards and a means for evaluating these standards. APENS Project Purpose The purpose of the APENS project was to ensure that physical education instruction for students with disabilities be provided by qualified physical education instructors. The purpose was designed to be achieved by addressing two goals: 1. Develop national standards for the field of adapted physical education, and 2. Develop a national certification examination to measure knowledge of the standards.
