Brethren We Have Met to Worship

Brethren we have met to worship And adore the Lord our God Will you pray with all your power While we try to preach the Word All is vain unless the Spirit Of the Holy One comes down Brethren pray and holy manna Will be showered all around

Brethren see poor sinners round you Slumb’ring on the brink of woe Death is coming hell is moving Can you bear to let them go See our fathers and our mothers And our children sinking down Brethren pray and holy manna Will be showered all around

Sisters will you join and help us Moses’ sister aided him Will you help the trembling mourners Who are struggling hard with sin Tell them all about the Savior Tell them that He will be found Sisters pray and holy manna Will be showered all around

Let us love our God supremely Let us love each other too Let us love and pray for sinners Till our God makes all things new Then He’ll call us home to heaven At His table we’ll sit down Christ will gird himself and serve us With sweet manna all around

Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee

Joyful Joyful we adore Thee God of glory Lord of love Hearts unfold Like flowers before Thee Opening to the sun above

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness Drive the dark of doubt away Giver of immortal gladness Fill us with the light of day

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsWe must get dressed with Jesus! But, how do we do that in everyday life?

Colossians 3:12–14 (NASB) So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;

Colossians 3:12–14 (NASB) 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

Colossians 3:12–14 (NASB) 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

Sermon in a Sentence To live a life that glorifies Christ in all things, 1) we must remember belonging to Christ includes belonging to Christ’s community (12–15); 2) we must put on the virtues of Christ (12); 3) we must deal with one another as Christ dealt with us (13), and 4) we must mature in Christ through love for one another (14).

Christ is Enough to Clothe Us1. We must remember belonging to Christ includes belonging to Christ’s community (12–15).

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsThe NT assumes involvement in a local church is vital to the Christian life.

Christ is Enough to Clothe Uschosen - plural saints - plural beloved - plural

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsYou are chosen, set apart, and loved by God within the context of God’s community.

Christ is Enough to Clothe Us“[We] were not drawn out of [our] sinful environment as pebbles are picked up from the beach. On the contrary, [we] were called a body, for from eternity, [we] had been viewed as a corporate entity ‘in Christ.” --Hendricksen

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsChrist builds into us the implications of His salvation through relationships forged in the context of a local church.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsChurch membership is the means by which we are organized for mission and accountable and encouraged in the lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsBelonging to Christ means belonging to one another, and we pledge to live for Christ by loving and supporting His church with the totality of our lives.

Christ is Enough to Clothe Us2. We must put on the virtues of Christ (12).

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsBelonging to Christ should produce real change in our lives.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsYou cannot put on that which you do not possess.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsThe Christian life is about getting up, putting on Christ, and proving the power of Christ in relationships with other believers.

Christ is Enough to Clothe Usheart of compassion: a deep feeling, a yearning with the deeply-felt affection of Christ.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsKindness seeks the good of others with no expectation of repayment.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsHumility does not begin with our rights but with our rescue. It flows from an overwhelming sense of awe that we even get to be part of what God is doing.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsGentleness is the willingness to suffer injury rather than inflict it. It knows when to be silent rather than making sure everyone gets my two cents.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsPatience is trusting God in the face of adversity, misunderstanding, and even hurt. If kindness is our basic approach to dealing with people, patience is our basic response. It is refusing to give in to cowardice, despair, or anger despite trials and disappointments.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsAs an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. (James 5:10)

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsDoes the decision I am making, the words I am speaking, or the demeanor I am displaying show I have put on Christ? Christ is enough to clothe the Christian.

Christ is Enough to Clothe Us3. We must deal with one another as Christ dealt with us (13).

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsWe find out if we’ve gotten dressed with the virtues of Christ in the context of real relationships.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsThe command to bear with one another “acknowledges every Christian fellowship is made up of all kinds of people and that we will accordingly sometimes find ourselves in close fellowship with people who are very different than we are” (Moo, 279).

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsA man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression. Prov 19:11

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsDon’t let molehills become mountains in your life.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsWe prove that we understand the grace of God’s patience when we extend God’s patience toward us to others.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsIf possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men (Rom 12:18)

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsWhere there is a complaint (13), hurt, or grievance, let there be repentance, forgiveness and restoration.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsFailing to forgive keeps us from the joy God gives when we give ourselves to Him.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsIf you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. (Matt 5:23–24)

Christ is Enough to Clothe Us4. We must mature in Christ through love for one another (14).

Christ is Enough to Clothe Usand upon all these – love

Christ is Enough to Clothe Us“Love is pictured as a garment that is to be put ‘on top of’ the other items of dress in verse 12.” (Moo, 280).

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsHave you really put on Christ? Conduct the love test.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsAbove all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsThe promise of verse 14 is that the opportunities we have to love are what God uses to mature us.

Christ is Enough to Clothe UsTo glorify Christ in all things, we must understand we were made for the family of God, we must be clothed with the virtues of Christ, we must forgive as Christ forgave us, and we must love.

Response

He Leadeth Me O Blessed Thought

He leadeth me O blessed thought O words with heavenly comfort fraught Whate'er I do where-e'er I be Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me

He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me

Sometimes 'mid scenes of deepest gloom Sometimes where Eden's bowers bloom By waters still o'er troubled sea Still 'tis His hand that leadeth me

He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me

Lord I would clasp Thy hand in mine Nor ever murmur Nor repine Content whatever lot I see Since 'tis thy hand that leadeth me

He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me

And when my task on earth is done When by Thy grace The vict'ry's won E'en death's cold wave I will not flee Since God through Jordan leadeth me

He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me
