2 Animate vs. inanimate There are 2 different types of phrases for color terms in Sauk. One phrase refers to living things (people, animals, and some foods). This translates to “He is ____.” For example: wâpethiwa “He is grey.” This is the animate form. The other phrase refers to inanimate nouns. This translates to “It is ____.” For example: kâhpîhâtêwi “It is brown.”
3 ashkipakethiwa He is green.
4 mahkatêwethiwa He is black.
5 wîpekothiwa He is blue.
6 wâpethiwa He is grey.
7 thîwanwâthowa He is purple.
8 kâhpîhâthowa He is brown.
9 wâpeshkethiwa He is white.
