Does Athletics Effect Grade Point Average?By: Kacey Engler, Halie Circelli, & Tim Beal
Purpose We collected data from a fair survey that was given to students in grades asking if they participated in a sport and their current GPA. Then we compared the GPA of school athletes to those of non school athletes.
Procedure We created a short survey asking if they participate in a sport, whether it is a school sport, gender, grade, and consent to use their GPA. 25 students were surveyed from each grade during their free periods, making a total of 100 surveys. We monitored their surveys to avoid any incorrect answers. With the permission of the students, we gave the surveys to the school guidance counselor to add the student’s official GPA.

Hypothesis We obtained online information regarding the average GPA of athletes and non athletes in high school within the United States. According to the information we found, students who don’t participate in school sports tend to have an average GPA around , while school athletes have an average of We believe this is true within VVS High School. Our hypothesis is that VVS athletes have a higher GPA than non VVS athletes and may exceed the national average.

ConClusion In conclusion, we found that the students who participate in a school sport had a higher GPA than those who do not participate in a school sport. In comparison to the national survey, our students of VVS High School achieved higher grades. The national grade for athletes was 85 while our students reached an average of This proves our hypothesis to be true, stating VVS athletes exceed the normal GPA average.
Biases When surveying we noticed many of the students who gave consent for us to receive their GPA’s were confident with their grades while those who did not, felt uncomfortable allowing access to their personal grades. A majority of the students we tested are considered athletes rather than non athletes. We observed most non athletes were less willing to participate once they saw that their GPA’s were required. Also, a majority of the school does play sports. Therefore, we have to purposely survey students who we knew were non-athletes eliminating the random survey technique. Furthermore, some students didn’t take the survey seriously which made us have to get rid of them.
Alterations If we were to revise our survey, we should find an equal amount of athletes and non athletes along with females and males from each grade. We would also monitor the surveys more closely to avoid incorrect answers. In the future, we would think of a way to access the GPAs other than going through the guidance counselors. The data we received from them was accurate but it took too much of our time. We also ran into problems trying the get the GPAs without knowing who they belonged to. If we were to go through the guidance counselors again we would have to be more specific with our instructions and give them more time to put together the confidential data. We started with a sample size of 100 but threw out 3 outliers making the total sample size 97. In the future, we would sample more than 100 students to account for the outliers.
