Century High School Eligibility Guidelines and Expectations For Coaches and Athletes

Educational Based AthleticsAthletics - Fine Arts – Academics – Activities - Community Club programs do not offer an inclusive sitting where there is a value on the entire student-athlete in all categories. Educational programs intertwine Academics, behavior, attendance, citizenship, team and family When coaches and student-athletes are on the playing surface we are one family with a common goal for Century High School. We will brand our programs and celebrate our school successes.

Rochester Public Schools“Lifelong Learning for All” Mission - Our mission is to inspire, challenge, and empower all students with the knowledge and skills required to reach their full potential, to contribute to future generations, and to become involved members of a global community.

MSHSL Mission StatementThe Minnesota State High School League provides educational opportunities for students through interscholastic athletic and fine arts programs and provides leadership and support for member schools.

Fair Play As an athlete and coach I will play the game fair –No ejections No Red Cards No Yellow Cards No Unsportsmanlike Penalties Ethical Decisions

Responsibility For My ActionsAs an athlete – I am fully enrolled and will keep myself in good standing at school. I am responsible for my actions and the consequences of my actions. I will attend class every hour and be on time for classes. I will attend all classes the day after an event. I earn 24 credits towards graduation (minimum 3 credits per semester). I will follow the schools behavior guidelines outline in the Rights, Rules and Regulations Guide and the Bylaws of the MSHSL. I will not receive cash for participation in events, contest or invites. I will not participate/practice/tryout for a college or university team. I have six consecutive semesters of eligibility and have not exceeded 20 years of age.

Respect – Code Of ConductAs an athlete and coach I will - I will respect the rights and beliefs of others and treat others with courtesy and consideration. I will respect the property of others. I will respect others racial, religious and sexual preference. I will respect and obey the rules of my school and the laws of my community, state and country. I will show respect to those who are responsible for enforcing the rules of my home, school, laws of my community, state and country. This will include parents, coaches, administrators, officials and our opponents. Students can and will be interviewed by administration without their parent/guardian present Students are expected to be honest and truthful during an investigation Participation is a privilege for those in good standing and participation is not a right

Dedication To Myself And TeamAs an athlete who values participation and their teammates I will not have a chemical violation (alcohol, tobacco, drug). I will not have a behavior violation. I will not haze, trash, intimidate, sexually harass or bully others. An athlete with a chemical violation will lose certain honors (athletic letter, Big Nine All Conference, captainship for one year and other end of season awards). Police reports, pictures, videos, twitter and written statements can be used as evidence when investigating a chemical or behavior violation. Teachers and coaches are reliable reporters.

Integrity As an athleteI will follow the District guidelines for residency. My entire family resides in the Century attendance area. I will not lie about my family residency. If I have questions about moving, transferring or residency I will contact the Activities Director. I will not participate on non-school teams during the high school season.

“End of Season” The season runs from the first day of practice through the last game of the state tournament. If a student has a chemical violation, prior to the notification and selection the student will be removed from consideration for any of the end of season awards. Athletes must register by the first day of practice and complete the entire season for a violation to count.

Expectations for CaptainsAre to be in class every hour of every day. In all classes the day after an away event. Role models in the classroom, hallways and in the community. Role models on the practice and game surface. First to arrive and last to leave practice and games. Knowledge of sport, trustworthy, honest, organized, good listener. Respectful toward others (coaches, parents, teachers and officials). Loyal to their team(s) and coaches. Can make ethical decisions. Active participant in leadership training.

Protocol for Concerns Many times emotion is the first reaction. At home, calmly have conversations and wait 24 hours and re-discuss the concern with your son or daughter. Do they want to have the issue addressed? Has your son or daughter talk with the coach about their concern, feelings or issues? Mistakes will happen. Parent and student should make an appointment with the coach. Parent, student and coach can make an appointment with Activities Director. There is no basis or documented cases of retaliation. Issues should be resolved timely, don’t wait until the end of the season. State Statue – parents concerns solely cannot be the reason for dismissing a coach. You are not the evaluator. Coaches will have the autonomy to move athletes from one level to another during the regular season and/or post season. Coaches evaluate social, emotional, physical and educational needs.

Risk of Alcohol We need to work together to eliminate student consumption of drugs and alcohol. Our students have a serious problem if he or she can not remain chemically free for their peers. All students have dedicated countless hours and parents are financially vesting in their child’s sport. When one or more team members has a violation, the entire team suffer. ATHLETE PLEASE HOLD EACH OTHER ACCOUNTABLE. Hosting parties and sleepovers with under age drinking or supplying alcohol to minors is not acceptable and doesn’t help us deal with the issue.

Social Media It is a tool, not a toy. Nothing is truly private… EVER.If you retweet it (or share it), you own it. Personal branding: Every tweet reflects who you are. What should you post? Say thank you, to your fans, parents and others Show support for others Share news and humor Engage in discussions with those you admire Post anything consistent with your personal brand Athletic Business article – posted on website.
