(85 respondents) 54% across more than one department 38% across one department 8% not supported / not sure Careers Services mentioned 45 times Business School/ Academic Dept. mentioned 30 times, Enterprise Unit mentioned 20 times – More Careers Services tuned into this than expected Richard Its important…there is a difference…but what is it?? Its happening in more than 50% of our institutions We need to talk about it We need to acknowledge cultural issues We need to recognise the sensitivity on both sides The history…both types of services under threat and change, history of ‘Connections’ Above all…don’t talk about people…….eg “Enterprise people are……..” lets talk about ‘services’ or ‘cultures’ Enterprise, Careers, and Employability Culture September 13

15 A Cultural Approach (Hawkins)Enterprise Careers Artefacts (policy statements, mission statements, dress codes, furnishings, buildings PR) Jeans Pitching Smart Interviews Behaviour (what people do and say, what is rewarded, how conflict is resolved, how mistakes are treated) Take a risk (Forgiveness not permission) Get Permission (Permission not forgiveness) Mind-set (organisational world view, ways of thinking that constrain behaviour, organisational values in use, basic assumptions) Individualism Create something Professionalism Obtain something Emotional Ground (mostly unconscious emotional states and needs that create a context in which events are perceived) Excitement Formal Motivational Roots (Underlying sense of purpose that links the organisation and the individuals) Helping others to achieve Richard Schein – cultural models that examine culture in levels Hawkins is a development of Schein We want to develop a model by questionnaires to more people..any volunteers?
