Our topics this year will include: Hunter Gatherers Road Trip to USA All Hands on Deck Switched On Exning Life Our long term plans will be available on our website shortly. Please check our class page for half-termly updates on what we will be learning in that half-term. National Curriculum

Growth Mindset We use a growth mind-set approach where there are different levels of challenge and children are encouraged to choose their own level.

English Spoken Language Reading – word reading Reading – comprehension Writing – Transcription (spelling) Writing – Composition (plan – draft & write – evaluate & edit) Writing – handwriting (legibility, consistency & quality) Writing – vocabulary, grammar and punctuation

Reading Reading Log Please write in your child’s Reading Log if you hear them read and record any response your child may have given you to questions you asked them. Also encourage your child to write in their own Reading Log as well. They could use their ‘Canine Crew’ bookmark to write some comments that are relevant to what they have read e.g. I think the word ‘scruffy’ tells me that maybe Pongo has not been looked after properly. I think he may be a stray dog.

Maths Number and Place Value (numbers to 1000) Addition and Subtraction (three-digit numbers) Multiplication and Division (3, 4 and 8 times tables) Fractions Statistics Geometry Measurement (lengths, mass, volume, capacity, telling the time)

Maths Pupils are developing fluency, reasoning skills and their ability to solve problems through the following mathematical content: 1. Counting from zero in multiples of four, eight, 50 and 100 2. Recognising the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens and ones) and finding 100 more or less than a given number 3. Using place value and number facts to solve number problems and practical problems 4. Adding and subtracting numbers mentally, including: a three-digit number and ones; a three-digit number and tens; a three-digit number and hundreds 5. Applying addition and subtraction to numbers with up to three digits using the columnar addition method 6. Solving scaling and correspondence problems for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that are known, including problems that involve multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number

Maths 7. Recognising, finding and writing fractions of a discrete set of objects, including unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators 8. Measuring, comparing, adding and subtracting: lengths (m, cm, mm); mass (kg, g); volume or capacity (l, ml) 9. Telling and writing the time from an analogue clock and in 12-hour format, and comparing durations of events 10. Identifying right angles; recognising that two right angles make a half-turn, three right angles make three quarters of a turn and four right angles a complete turn; identifying whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle 11. Interpreting and presenting data using bar charts, pictograms and tables.

3 KS2 Expectations

Homework Talk for Writing HomeworkThis will usually be sent home before we do a ‘Hot Task’ (an assessed piece of writing each half-term) This is a talking exercise only, nothing needs to be written down Prepares the children for writing independently Ideas are fresh in their mind Maths, English or Topic Homework This will usually be set on a Friday to be handed in the following Thursday Homework will be marked, displayed and/or shared with the rest of the class and put in their homework folder. Spelling lists, rules and activities may be sent home for children to practice If children would like to practice/consolidate something we have been doing in class they may bring additional activities home but this is not expected to be handed in Children will be expected to complete their homework in their own time in school if it is not handed in on time. Homework

Spelling Challenge Spelling ChallengeThis now runs from KS1 through to Year 6 It starts with phase 2 words and runs through all of the common exception words fro each year group Children are expected to be learning their spellings at home Spelling activities and sheets are freely available for the children to help themselves to Usually your child will be given one opportunity during the week to be tested on their spelling words The words will be read in a dictated sentence and they will have to spell all of their spelling challenge words correctly in order to move onto the next challenge Spelling Challenge

Times Table Challenge Times Table ChallengeThis runs from Year 3 through to Year 6 Children will be tested every Friday and they are trying to beat their previous week’s score We will return their marked test to bring home so that you can see the times table they need to continue to work on In Year 3 it is expected that your child will be able to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables (the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables are a Year 2 expectation). Purple Mash has some multiplication activities and songs You Tube has some catchy songs to listen and learn from Times Table Challenge

Diamond Quest Diamond Quest This runs from Year 3 through to Year 6Designed to encourage children to read as many books as they can. Each book they read will move them one level up the Diamond Quest board. Teachers have the discretion to decide what a book is worth depending on that child’s ability. They start at Bronze and go through Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Once they are at Diamond, they can go around again. At the end of each half-term we will have a Diamond Quest treat. Gold (read three books) = 30 minutes of treat time Platinum (four books) = 45 minutes of treat time Diamond (five books) = 60 minutes an hour If they reach Diamond twice in a half-term, they receive a brand new book which they can choose for themselves. For the children who have not reached the Gold level, they will be given some reading-based activities to complete during this time. Diamond Quest
