12 « Texas » comes from the Caddo Indian word for « tashas », which became « tejas ». Both mean « friend. » I’ve always heard it came from the tiles that line the roof tops. They are called “tejas.”

18 La Batalla de Puebla Mexico owed money to France, Great Britain, and Spain, but had no money to pay their debt. All three nations sent armies to Mexico to force payment, but Great Britain and Spain were convinced to leave and wait for payment. France wanted its money and prepared to march on Mexico City. At the city of Puebla, 6,000 French troops expected to win against the 4,500- strong Mexican army– they were much better equiped and prepared to fight a « modern war ». The Mexicans won against this superior force. We celebrate this victory to this day:

23 Vaqueros Vaqueros, or cowboys, were the men in charge of the herds (las vacas). They wore canvas cloth trousers, which came to be known as « vaqueros ». We now call them « jeans. » (Check the glossary of your book, you will find the word).

24 Conjunto Music « Conjunto » music is popular dance music from Northern Mexico and Southern Texas. In the late 19th century, German and Eastern European settlers along the Texas/Mexico border introdcued accordions, waltzes, polkas to the region. The Mexican and Tejano population adapted this music to their own style.
