1 IMPERFECTO O PRETERITO  You’ve probably realized that Spanish has lots of tricky “pairs”:  Ser/estar  Por/para  Masculine/feminine  Here’s another one:  Preterite/imperfect

2 ¿Pretérito o imperfecto?  Spanish has two basic ways to talk about the past:  Preterite  Imperfect  In this slide show, we’ll look at some the differences in how each tense in used.

3 Pretérito  Let’s review some of the main uses of the preterite. This verb tense is used when:  we talk about a past action that happened one time OR  interrupted something already going on OR  was the beginning of an event OR  was the end of an event.

4 Pretérito  Past actions that happened once. Ejemplos :  Juan se levantó a las 6:00.  Ayer, Gloria llegó tarde a clase.  ¿Hiciste la tarea?

5 Interruptions: Yo dormía cuando sonó el teléfono The end of an event: Terminé el proyecto a la medianoche. Los Osos de Chicago ganaron el campeonato de fútbol americano.

6 Pretérito  The beginning of an event:  Cristóbal Colón llegó a las Américas en 1492.  La película empezó a las 3:00.

7 Imperfecto NNext let’s review some of the main uses of the imperfect. This verb tense is used when we talk about a past action that hhappened many times OR wwas in progress (“was …ing”) OR ddescribed a condition.

8  Repeated or habitual actions in the past  Repeated or habitual actions in the past :  Cuando yo tenía 15 años, vivía en Miami.  La maestra siempre nos leía cuentos de hada en la guardería infantil

9 was in progress (“was …ing”)  Los chicos estaban construyendo edificios con sus bloques.  La niña estaba llorando en el patio de recreo porque se cayó.

11 AL WEPT  A: age, attitude, appearance  Cuando yo tenía 15 años…  …no me gustaba comer zanahorias.  De niña, Marta era muy alta.

12 AL WEPT  L: location  La chica estaba cerca de la escuela

13 AL WEPT  W: weather  Hacía muy mal tiempo durante mis vacaciones.

14 AL WEPT  Estar + Emotions  Ella estaba triste  Todos nosotros estábamos felices.

15 AL WEPT  P: physical attributes  Mi padre era muy alto y mi madre era muy baja.

17 ¡VAMOS A PRACTICAR!  ¿ Pretérito o imperfecto?  Fueron / Eran las diez de la mañana y hizo / hacía buen tiempo.  Ella fue/era joven y bonita.

18 1. Todos los días nosotros íbamos/fuimos a la escuela 2. Mi amiga era/fue muy símpática. 3. Ella estaba/estuvo durmiendo cuando su hermano la despertaba/despertó. 4. La semana pasada estudiaba/estudié para el examen de historia. 5. Hacía/hizo un sol muy bonito cuando de repente comenzaba/comenzó a llover.

19 ¡Más práctica, por favor!  Los niños jugaron/jugaban al fútbol en el parque. Su madre leía/leyó una novela debajo de un árbol. De repente, uno de los niños se caía/cayó [fell], se golpeaba/golpeó [hit] la cabeza, y empezaba/empezó a llorar.

20 Por último…  Preterite  one-time past event OR  interruption OR  the beginning or end of an event.  Imperfect  Repeated/habitu al past action OR  was in progress (“was …ing”) OR  described a condition.
