July 03, 2017 Manuel Collares PereiraINIESC A new National Research Infrastructure on Solar Energy Concentration (Chairman) July 03, Manuel Collares Pereira

INIESC the opportunityBrings together the two leading institutions in Portugal with competence in Solar Concentration in its multiple aspects: U. Évora (Renewable Energies Chair) and LNEG High complementarity Presently with strong and active pursue of several important R&D topics in SEC Substantial Infrastructure type investment already made Strong integration with ESFRI and other European R&D networks, industry and projects

INIESC the task Conversion of solar energy at medium/high temperatures with SEC: technology development for marketable products and solutions, through: new concepts: new optical solutions capable of higher conversion efficiencies at different temperatures (and applications); new thermal energy storage concepts and their demonstration, new HTF. related fields: water desalination, industrial process heat, thermoelectricity, production or solar fuels, promoting technology transfer to the industry and enabling an holistic approach to the product development process study and development of other applications at different operating temperatures, including demonstration as integrated solutions addressing different needs and markets; support to industry, new concepts and engineering support in their own product development stage, with infrastructural and scientific framework enabling corresponding performance assessment and product certification process; capacity building: training of young researchers, development of training courses addressing the related engineering concepts at different levels. 4 Out. 2016| Manuel Collares PereiraSolar Energy Heat- thermal applications (low and high temperature: heat and cold, process heat, dessalination, solar fuels (…)) Electricity Production : 1) Photovoltaics(PV) – decentralized and centralized production, no storage (>300 GW in the World); not dispatchable 2) Thermoelectricity (STE-CSP) (<4.3GW- in the World) but with low cost thermal energy storage : dispatchability!!!

CSP- 3 main technologies, still evolving stronglyStill quite an effort to bring costs down … <4.3GW

Motivation …energy storage…Out | Manuel Collares Pereira Motivation …energy storage… In bateries Today: euro/kWhe stored In 5 years (?!) – 180 a 300 euro/kWhe Life time: > 10 yr In thermal form: Today : 25 a 35 euro/kWhe In 5 years: 10 a 15 euro/kWhe Life time: >20 yr Factor of 20 X in cost , today (and in the future?!!)

Out. 2016| Manuel Collares Pereira…motivation… PV without bateries : the cheapest solar electricity today; costs for centralized production coming closer to those of fossil fuel produced electricity… little or no dispatchability STE- CSP centralized production with storage (7 to 15h at nominal power ); dispatchable electricity, much cheaper than that of PV with bateries; still able to come down in cost !
