2 Reading Selection  One winter day, Joanna became very sick with pneumonia*. She had a high fever and could hardly breathe1. The doctor told Joanna’s roommate Sue, “Your friend is very sick and may die. But if you can get her to think about living rather than dying, she’ll have a much better chance of getting well.”

3  When Sue returned to Joanna’s bedside2, she heard Joanna quietly countingbackwards3 while looking out the window.

5 “Five what. ” Sue asked in confusion7. “Leaves,” explained Joanna “Five what?” Sue asked in confusion7. “Leaves,” explained Joanna. “Five leaves on that vine. When the last one falls, I’m going to die.” “Stop talking such nonsense8 and go back to sleep!” Sue scolded9 her friend.

6 “Wake me when there’s only one leaf left,” Joanna begged “Wake me when there’s only one leaf left,” Joanna begged. “I want to see it fall. I want to go just like the last leaf.” “Alright10,” Sue agreed reluctantly11 and pulled down the window shade12.

7  Then Sue went out into the freezing13 weather to buy Joanna some hot chicken soup. On her way back, she ran into a neighbor, Old Behrman*. He always drank too much, perhaps because he had never painted a masterpiece14. Sue told him about Joanna’s sickness and her idea about the last leaf.

8 “What. ” shouted the kind old man. “I’ve never heard of such a thing “What?!” shouted the kind old man. “I’ve never heard of such a thing! How crazy to believe you’re going to die when a leaf falls! Joanna’s a lovely girl, and she must live!”

9  Sue returned to the room, sat down ather friend’s bedside, and dozed15 off.  When Joanna woke up, she called out, “Sue, wake up! Pull up the shade so I can see outside.” Sue unwillingly16 did so. To their surprise, there was still one leaf left on the vine.

10 “Oh, the last leaf!” whispered Joanna, “I thought it would surely fall last night. Now I know I’m not going to die! Something made that last leaf stay on the wall to show me how silly I was!”

He had been sick for only a short time. “His shoes and clothing were soaked17 with rain when they found him,” explained Sue. “Next to him were a lantern18, a ladder19, brushes, and some paint.”
