2 $cholar$hip$ An extraordinary amount of money is provided by our local donors as an investment in you and your future! Last year, 83 South High graduates received $764,374 in total gifts. These are truly gifts—NOT entitlements!

3 Who Chooses the Winners?Last year, fifteen scholarships were chosen by South’s Scholarship Selection Committee The majority of scholarships are chosen by outside, community donors. South High staff are not involved in the selection of any of these scholarships. So, your application and its essay/statement, must do a fine job of presenting who you are and why donors should invest in you! You may not be eligible for all of the scholarships we will be awarding. (For example, some scholarships are for specific majors. Others may be awarded just on the rank within your class!)

4 Who Chooses the winner? Other scholarships are only for South students who have taken traditional “mortar” classes (without ANY online/charter classes.) Do not panic! This is a minority of scholarships. Students will be eligible for scholarships chosen specifically by the South High School Selection Committee, if he/she received first semester grades from South High during his/her senior year. Preference will be given to students who have attended South High School for their entire four years of high school.

5 Who Chooses the Winner? Other scholarships may be focused only on character! What does your referral history look like? How many unexcused absences do you have? Are there extenuating community circumstances? In other words, the criteria varies greatly from one scholarship to another.

6 On the Web. . . Access the local scholarship application on our website, underneath the Redwing logo at: uth/academics/counseling.cfm Only typed or computer-generated applications will be accepted—NO handwritten applications! Families without computers are encouraged to use the South High computers in the IMC prior to the deadline date! Completed applications are due to the Counseling Center no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3rd—NO exceptions!

8 The Application, Con’t. . . College(Including Technical School) You Were Accepted To: Plan to Attend: We ask this as some scholarships may only be for a public university, a two-year technical school, etc.

9 The Application, Con’t “Why Do We Ask About Your Intended Major?” Some scholarships may only be for specific majors (for example, an award may be specifically for a person who majors in education/teaching). We recommend that you put down a major—not “undecided” or “liberal arts”.

10 The application, con’t. . . “Why Do I Need to Provide My Elementary and Middle School Information?” Some scholarships are given to students who attend a specific elementary or middle school. Did Either Parent Attend College/University/Technical College?: check NO if they do NOT have a four-year bachelors, two-year associates, or a technical school certificate of training.

11 The application, con’t “Why is Family Financial Information Requested?” Some scholarships have as a criteria a family’s financial need. Also, the number of children in the family and the number of family members in college may play an important factor for recipient selection! Please specify any changes Has a parent become unemployed? Large medical expenses? We ask for this as it may NOT be apparent in the 2015 tax return.

13 Student Activity Profile PageBe thorough for both high school and community involvement. Leadership positions are especially important—make yourself stand out from other students, BUT be HONEST!!! Quality vs. Quantity! Mr. Hein, Activities Director, will need to sign off on the profile page to verify your activities listed! Get his signature BEFORE you hand in your application to the Counseling Center.

14 The Essay/statement. . . “Describe your educational and personal goals and how you plan to finance them.” It is important that you write a thorough response, reflective of who you are. Your voice and personality need to shine through. The essay could be the item that pushes your application to the front of the line. It may also be used in case of a tie breaker. Seek advice from an English teacher or family member to proofread or edit Spelling! Spelling! Spelling!

15 Let’s Assess a few essays. . .Essay Rubric Handout Essay #1: My mother had once told me, “Education is the key to success”. I want to become a teacher. Growing up an Asian American, I was placed into the English Second Language Program. I grew to despise this program, because I thought it was nonsense. There were always teachers around to help me with everything from reading to writing. Never had I ever thought about the impact on the education that was

This program taught me that I should use what is availables a teacher, my goal is to help kids find themselves through education. I want to contribute to building a strong, independent and hardworking generation that will soon lead our future. I want to be a part of the making of this future, but right now my generation is the future. I plan to finance college from student loans. I also plan to work a part time job to help pay off these student loans. After finishing school, I hope to find a job in the education field and

18 Essay #2 From an early age, my parents nurtured my love of reading. My favorite genre was nonfiction; I loved reading books involving topics such as space and dinosaurs, but books about history and the role of government were always at the top of my list. Looking back, however, one topic comes to the forefront as a favorite: historical women. My parents always made sure to provide me with books about powerful and inspiring women, from Harriet Tubman to Eleanor Roosevelt. My love for women’s history can be explained by a single anecdote: in third grade, my class was tasked with researching, dressing

19 Essay #2, continued Up as, and presenting as a historical figure. Many of my classmates chose athletes, past presidents, or pop divas. I chose Sandra Day O’Connor. The day of our presentations was one of the most frustrating days of my elementary school career, because I continuously had to explain who I was dressed up as, and why she was important. While my education no longer provides the opportunity to dress up as super cool historical ladies, my love for women’s history has translated into a more grown-up passion for feminism, women’s rights, and female empowerment. This is why I wish to

20 Essay #2, continued Pursue a degree in international relations, with an eventual goal of working in human rights law. I chose this major because I want to be a leader when it comes to policy changes in the developing world. I have been passionate about women’s rights ever since I can remember, and I want to turn this passion into a career that matters, and can have a real impact. Although I have been certain about my career plans for a few years, my financial plans have always been less certain. In order to finance my education, I hope to utilize a combination of

21 Essay #2, continued School-specific scholarships and financial aid, as well as outside scholarships. I will also be taking out loans, as needed. I plan on entering law school immediately after the completion of my undergraduate degree, I hope to have a relatively low amount of debt. Because of this, and because I cannot afford to pay for college on my own, I have dedicated a significant portion of my senior year to applying for scholarships,

22 Essay #2, Continued From specific colleges as well as general scholarships. I will also be working full-time this summer, and saving money for my education. When it comes to personal goals, they are very much tied to my educational and professional goals. I have always had a desire to make a difference and an impact, whether that is in my community here in the United States or abroad. Throughout my high school career, I have tried my best to do this

23 Essay #2, concluded By volunteering at various community organizations. These range from the John Michael Kohler Arts Center to Nourish, which provides free lunch to children. While I have enjoyed my time volunteering, living, and learning in Sheboygan, it is time for me to broaden my horizons and attempt to make change elsewhere. By pursuing a degree in international relations and an eventual career in human rights law, I can make this impact, and be instrumental in policy changes affecting human rights around the world.
