2 LOOK UP! Many kids today look down instead of up… Excerpt from Albert Ueltschi’s book, History and Future of Flightsafety International. Golden Age of Aviation Fast forward to 2009! –Need Aerospace Engineers, Astronauts, Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, Technicians, Airport Managers, other jobs related to aviation/aerospace. Who? How do we prepare them?

3 Purpose 1.Build and maintain an online database of vetted aviation/aerospace curricula and programmatic materials which support the team’s goals. This database will be available to all teachers in the United States. 2.Create a growing team of educators committed to using aviation/aerospace education to teach STEM subjects in alignment with national standards. 3. Vigorously promote clear pathways toward higher education and aviation/aerospace careers.

4 Educators in LOOK UP!… integrate aviation/aerospace into teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics…example Algebra I. integrate aviation/aerospace into teaching careers….example Aeroscholars. develop and implement aviation/aerospace pathways to FAA certifications….example LSA Maintenance Repairman.

5 Initial Steps Recruit educators from across the United States to become charter members of LOOK UP! Build a learning community through regular face to face and online methods. Begin collection of curricula/programmatic materials. Identify development opportunities to fund future growth and activities.. All members will be committed to incorporate aviation/aerospace into current teaching assignments.

7 Year-One Objectives Create barnstorming program to visit schools across the United States and promote aviation/aerospace. –BuildAPlane’s Glasair –Frankfort HS Aviation Academy’s Aeronca Chief –GAMA’s Cirrus Continue national efforts to grow teacher membership. Launch online repository of aviation/aerospace curricula materials Develop partnerships with existing aviation/aerospace organizations

8 Year-One Objectives Promote grassroots training and support sessions for teachers to use aviation/aerospace to motivate learning STEM subjects. Organize national and regional member meetings, including 2010 National Science Teachers Association Conference Philadelphia (March 18-21, 2010) Sun N Fun Florida (April 13-18, 2010) 2010 National Council on Teaching Mathematics Conference San Diego (April 21-24, 2010) AirVenture 2010 Wisconsin (July 2010)
