1 Marcos 10:35 - 45 35 Y se le acercaron Santiago y Juan, los dos hijos de Zebedeo, diciéndole: “Maestro, queremos que hagas por nosotros lo que te pidamos”. 36 Y Él les dijo: “¿Qué es lo que desean?” 37 Ellos le dijeron: “Concédenos que en tu gloria nos sentemos uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda”.

2 38 Pero Jesús les dijo: “No saben lo que piden. ¿Podrán pasar la prueba que yo voy a pasar, y recibir el bautismo con que seré bautizado?” 39 Y ellos le dijeron: “Podemos”. Y Jesús les dijo: “Ciertamente pasarán la prueba que yo voy a pasar, y recibirán el bautismo con que yo seré bautizado. 40 Pero eso de sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda, no es mío él concederlo, sino que es para quienes ha sido preparado”.

3 41 Al oír esto, los diez comenzaron a indignarse contra Santiago y Juan. 42 Y llamándolos junto a sí, Jesús les dijo: “Ya saben que los jefes de las naciones las gobiernan como si fueran sus dueños y los poderosos los oprimen. 43 Pero no debe ser así entre ustedes. Al contrario: el que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea su servidor, 44 Y el que quiera ser el primero, que sea siervo de todos.

6 Mark 10:35 - 45 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 He replied, “What do you wish me to do for you?” 37 They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.”

7 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

8 41 When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. 42 Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. 43 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; 44 whoever wishes to be first among you will be the servant of all.

11 Reflections on Mark 10:35 – 45 Reflexiones en Marcos 10:35 - 45 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Oct. 18, 2015 The Gospel for today has to be read in proper context in order to be properly understood. Note that it comes immediately after the third Passion prediction, which is Mark 10:32-34. Here Jesus was thinking of his coming death. He knew he was about to be betrayed. He said it ahead of time. He would be betrayed to the high priests and scribes, and be condemned to death. It is important to see what the mind of Christ and the mind of the Apostles were at that time. We also want to see what the early Church Fathers thought about that subject.

12 El Evangelio de hoy tiene que ser leído en el contexto adecuado para poder ser bien entendido. Tenga en cuenta que se trata de inmediato después de la tercera predicción de la pasión, que es Marcos 10:32-34. Aquí Jesús estaba pensando en su próxima muerte. Sabía que iba a ser traicionado. 13 Obviously, the Apostles were not listening. Chrysostom (On the Incomprehensible Nature of God 8.31), says James and John were expecting Jesus to enter into a visible kingdom and rule Jerusalem, and not to go to the cross and death. They thought this was the opportune moment to ask for the privilege of first seats among the others. Jesus told them they did not know what they were asking. “This was not the right time for crowns or prizes. It was the time for struggles, contests, toils, sweat, wrestling rings and battles”.

14 Obviamente, los apóstoles no estaban escuchando. Crisóstomo (En la incomprensible Naturaleza de Dios 8.31), dice que Santiago y Juan estaban esperando a Jesús entrar en un reino visible y mandar a Jerusalén, y no ir a la cruz y la muerte. Ellos pensaron que era el momento oportuno para preguntar por el privilegio de los primeros puestos entre los demás. 15 That is why Jesus said: “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized” (Mark 10:38)? They said: “We are able.” Note that St. Augustine (The Gospel of John 28.5.2) points out that Jesus meant the cup of humility and suffering. Chrysostom (Op. cit.) says here “Christ was calling his crucifixion a cup and his death a baptism. He called his cross a cup because he was coming to it with pleasure. He called his death a baptism because by it he cleansed the world”.

16 Por eso Jesús dijo: “¿Eres capaz de beber la copa que yo bebo, o ser bautizados con el bautismo con que yo soy bautizado” (Marcos 10:38)? Ellos dijeron: ‘Podemos.’ Noten que San Agustín (El Evangelio de Juan 28.5.2) señala que Jesús quiso decir la copa de la humildad y el sufrimiento. Crisóstomo (Op. cit.) aquí dice “Cristo estaba llamando su crucifixión una copa y su muerte un bautismo. Llamó a su cruz una copa porque él venía a éllo con gusto. Llamó a su muerte un bautismo, porque por ella limpió el mundo.”

17 Jesus foretold great things for the Apostles. The Apostle John was to sit at the right hand of the Lord at the Last Supper. He was the beloved Disciple who the foot of the Cross received Our Lady into his home (John 19:26). James would be held worthy of martyrdom. In Acts 12:2 it says Herod the King killed James the brother of John with the sword. Papias, an Early Church Father, tells us both died as martyrs.

18 Jesús predijo grandes cosas para los Apóstoles. El apóstol Juan llego a sentarse a la diestra del Señor en la Última Cena. Él era el discípulo amado que al pie de la Cruz recibió la Virgen en su casa (Juan 19:26). Santiago seria digno del martirio. En Hechos 12:2 dice que Herodes el rey mató a Santiago, el hermano de Juan con la espada. Papías, un Padre de la Iglesia temprana, nos dice que ambos murieron como mártires.

19 Baptism is a pledge of things to come. It is a dying and a rising. St. Paul said: “Don’t you know that all of us who have been baptized in Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” (Romans 6:1- 11). Practically speaking this means we have to break with the world. St. John defines “the world” as the collection of persons who resist God’s plan for holiness. In (1 John 2:16) he says “All that is in the world is lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life”.

20 Bautismo es una promesa de lo que vendrá. Es una muerte y un levantamiento. San Pablo dijo: “¿No sabéis que todos los que hemos sido bautizados en Cristo Jesús, hemos sido bautizados en su muerte?” (Romanos 6:1-11). En términos prácticos esto significa que tenemos que romper con el mundo. San Juan define “el mundo” como el conjunto de personas que se resisten a plan de Dios para la santidad. En (1 Juan 2:16) dice “Todo lo que hay en el mundo es concupiscencia de la carne, concupiscencia de los ojos, y la vanagloria de la vida”.

21 To the early Christians to be baptized meant that they entered into the company of Jesus and those who witnessed his exaltation and who had experienced the power of his resurrection (Philippians 3:10). It was a stunning experience. It was deeply moving and had a profound impact on their lives. They went all over the world sharing what they knew about this mysterious act, which laid the foundation for their new way of life.

22 Para los primeros cristianos ser bautizados significa que entraron en la compañía de Jesús y de los que fueron testigos de su exaltación y que habían experimentado el poder de su resurrección (Filipenses 3:10). Era una experiencia impresionante. Era profundamente conmovedora y tuvo un profundo impacto en sus vidas. 23 Today we join St. John and the early Christians by living our baptism. In 1 John 1:1-4 he says: “What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing this so that our joy may be complete”. Amen! Alleluia!

24 Hoy nos unimos a San Juan y a los primeros cristianos al vivir nuestro bautismo. En 1 Juan 1:1-4 nos dice: “ Lo que existía desde el principio, lo que hemos oído, lo que hemos visto con nuestros ojos, lo que contemplamos y tocaron nuestras manos acerca de la Palabra de la vida, pues la vida se manifestó y nosotros la hemos visto y damos testimonio, y les proclamamos la vida eterna que estaba junto al Padre y se nos manifestó, lo que hemos visto y oído, eso les proclamamos para que también ustedes estén en compañerismo con nosotros. Nosotros estamos en compañerismo con el Padre y con su Hijo, Jesucristo. Les escribimos estas cosas para que nuestra alegría sea completa”. ¡Amén! ¡Aleluya!
