MARKET OPPORTUNITIES FOR HALAL FOOD, NON-FOOD PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN NON ISLAMIC COUNTRIES MANILA, PHILIPPINES AUGUST 2017 SHEIKH THAFIER NAJJAAR In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلاة والسلام علي رسوله صلي الله عليه و سلم و علي أله صحبه اجمعين أما بعد All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Universe. Peace and Salutations onto his Beloved Prophet, families and all his companions.

THE HALAL MARKET IS UNIQUEThe global Halal market has emerged as a new growth sector in the global economy beyond the imagination of the economist. This is all over the world. This Halal industry has now become a force in the world as far as international trade is concerned. Also very important the Halal industry has now expanded beyond the food market, thus furthering the economy potentials for Halal.

According to the State of Global Islamic Economic (SGIE) Report 2015/2016, the halal food market now constitutes 12% of the global trade in agrifood products. This is unsurprising, as the global Muslim population as of today (2017) stands at 1.7 billion and is mostly young and growing twice the rate of the global population. 350 million Muslims have made their homes as minorities in many nations, especially in the West, and it is natural that these communities should be eager for products that cater to the needs of their faith—especially halal food. “At a time when the IMF describes the global economy [as] entering ‘secular stagnation’ due to a decline in investments and an ageing population, the Islamic economy stands in stark contrast offering the most viable solution to global economic growth and success in the 21st century.” I must also mention that Islamic dietary and consumption system is different and unique as this is part of a Muslim’s faith.

As the Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran:Surah Baqarah: Verse 168 O Mankind! Eat of what is lawful and clean (wholesome and good) on the earth and do not follow the footsteps of Shaitan, surely he is your open enemy. Allah also says: Surah Al-Mu’minoon: Verse 51 O Rasools! Eat of pure things and do good deeds, certainly I have knowledge of all your actions.

The Prophet Muhammad SAW also said:إن الله طيب لا يقبل إ لا طيبا Verily Allah is good (clean). He does not accept, except which is good (clean). THE WORLD & HALAL MARKET I think also very importantly, the world has now understood the importance of the Muslim requirements for food and indeed other consumption known as Halal certified. The market for certified Halal food and products is growing rapidly and robustly. I must also mention that the term Halal does not only attract Muslims but even non-Muslims as it is حلا لا طيبا (halal, wholesome, clean).

From an Islamic perspective, if it is not حلا لا طيبا (halal, wholesome, clean) – it can be harmful to the health as the Almighty says in his Glorious Quran: Surah Al A’raf: Verse 157 He allows them as lawful what is good (and pure), healthy and prohibits them from what is bad (impure) and unhealthy. Islam does not permit us to eat what is harmful and therefore not even allow to trade with harmful products. If a person (Muslim) trade with it, it is regarded as betraying the community and betraying the community is regarded as one of the biggest betrayals as Saydina Ali, the Fourth Ghalifa said: إن أعظم الخيا نة خيا نة الأ مة Verily, the greatest betrayal, is the betrayal of the community.

Here the Almighty says in His Glorious Quran:Surah Al-Anfal: Verse 58 Verily, Allah does not love those who betray. HALAL TRADE Today, Halal trade in the world is about ±1.6 Trillion dollars and estimate for growth beyond the imagination of the economist, as estimated billions of dollars a year in growth (which sounds a lot). So no longer is it a mere religion obligation or observance for Muslims, Halal market has become a powerful market for both Muslims and non-Muslims. The term Halal has not only become a global symbol for Muslims but also a symbol for quality assured and lifestyle choices. This is evident as we see many countries now racing to gain in the trade.

In 2030, over 79 countries are expected to hold a 50% of Muslims or more.In 2010, 1.6 billion Muslims around the world today there is an estimated 1.7 billion. Looking ahead to 2050, it will grow to 2.76 billion. In the United States, Muslims are projected to double to 21.9 by 2050 based on present demographic and immigration pattern. In spite of Donald Trump’s recent execution order, freezing immigration from 7 (seven) predominantly Muslim countries. According to research, by the year 2050, Muslims will be equal or more than the Christians. And by 2070 there is no doubt that it will grow drastically as the biggest population. The cause is through birth and mass conversion. By 2030, 1/3 of the world population will be Muslim and also, 60% at the moment are under 30%. In Philippines, by 2030 Muslims will be 50% of the population.

In South Africa, the government is ready to realize the greatness in trading and job creation in the Halal trade. They even established an organization to promote Halal trade. Recently, this organization went to an African country where the Muslims are the minority and within 3 days, business halal contracts were established and the business contracts were worth over $100 million in Halal trade. Yet we are only 2% of the population. But at the same time, I can guarantee you , you can go anywhere in South Africa, Halal is available. The growth of Halal trade is just great. Over 20% of the Muslim population live in countries where Muslims are the minority, yet the trade is on the rapid increase. 1.6 Trillion dollars is the world Halal market. So increase in demand creates increase in business. In Australia there is a perception that Muslims are 18% of the total population but yet due to political reasons, they don’t disclose their religion but according to the Guardian 82% of Muslims are under 45 years old and here Muslims are on the increase.

MAKING INROADS With Malaysia leading the world in halal food with its innovative marketing of products as “halal and toyyibah” (permissible and good), the halal food industry has made inroads into many countries including China and South Africa. Halal food can be found in many parts of the world — from New York to Jakarta — and even in countries where Muslims are minorities, where halal food is not perceived as exclusive for Muslims. The stringent methods employed in halal food preparation has made Halal food an attractive business proposition, as it would be more economical (and even profitable) to employ these methods to produce halal food on a bigger scale rather than just a minimal amount. This has peaked the interest of entrepreneurs who are seeking to tap the benefits of a fast-growing market. An interesting development in halal food production is that, despite the market being based on the religious needs of Muslims, many halal businesses are owned by non-Muslims who hire Muslims.

A few facts of Halal market in Europe:It has a value of over 67 Billion. On You Tube this is what they say “Islamic invasion of Europe”: 2:11 - in order for the culture to exist - not to vanish 1:9 - never revert 1:3 - impossible Years to correct it –there is no model to prove it. Fertility rate: French 1.6 Netherlands 1.3 Greece 1.3 Germany 1.2 Italy 1.1 Spain

EUROPE 31 countries - the fertilities has a rate historically it will be impossible to exist. In a matter of years, the European Union will seize to exist, but yet the population is not declining - why? - because of Islamic immigration. Of all the population in Europe since 1990 – 90% is Islamic immigrants. French 1.8 Children Muslims 8.1 Children 30% of population is under 20 years. In just 39 years, France will be an Islamic State and soon half of the population will be Muslim.

SWEDEN is hiding statistics. There will be 52 million in Europe in 20 years – it will double to 104 million. In fact, soon, the Muslims will dominate the world population. PEW RESEARCH STUDY USA 2050 France 31% Belgium 29%

HALAL MARKET America Million million Europe Million Muslims million Sub-Saharan Africa: The Muslim population in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to grow by nearly 60% in the next 20 years, from million in 2010 to million in 2030. Overall spending estimates suggest a significant market, even though it may lack detail. In 2013 Sub-Saharan African consumers spent an estimated US$114bn on halal food. In USA, the halal market could not meet the needs of Muslims. Therefore Muslims spend $16 Billion on Kosher products a year. Growth in Muslim population Increasing demand for safe high quality food in primary markets.

PHILIPPINES I am also happy to know that your country, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) or the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act 2015 aims to create the Philippines Halal Export Development.

CONCLUSION HOW TO TRADE IN ISLAM Here is what The Prophet Muhammad said on how to trade: إن أطيب الكسب كسب التجا ر Verily, the most honourable gain (in business) is the gain of a business person (merchant). الد ين ادا حدثوا لم يكدبوا When they speak, they do not lie وإدا أستمنوا لم يخونوا And if they are trusted, they do not betray (trust) وإدا وعدوا لم يخلفوا And if they promise, they do not break (it)

وإدا إشتروا لم يدموا And if they buy, they do not find fault (on purpose) وإدا باعوا لم يمدحوا If they sell, they do not praise (it) وإدا كان عليهم لم يوطلوا And if they (have to pay) they do not delay (prolong) it  وإدا كان لهم لم يعسروا And if (someone must pay them), they do not make it difficult.
