2 Our Goals (Nuestras Metas) To teach students the academic knowledge and skills (AKS) for fifth grade in a supportive, safe, and fun classroom environment. 3 Class Mission Statement Mrs. C’s class pledge to be respectful, responsible, honest, and great problem solvers. We will demonstrate level E and S behaviors and have a positive attitude. We will cheer each other on and always try to exceed in all we do.

4 Classroom Community (Salon en comunidad) Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. BES CARDINAL RULES I am an active participant; I have a positive attitude. I am respectful of others, their thoughts, materials, and space. I have all of my materials ready. 6 School-wide discipline policy (Sistema Disciplinario a Nivel de Escuela) Students who have trouble following the school and classroom rules will take the following steps: Los estudiantes que tengan problemas siguiendo las reglas de la escuela han de seguir los siguientes pasos: 1.They will be moved to the take a break chair in the classroom and reflect. 1.Serán movidos a una silla especial en la clase para reflexionar. 2.They will be placed in a buddy teacher’s classroom. 2. 7 Attendance and Tardiness Asistencia y Puntualidad We can’t stress enough the importance of attending school each day. –Es muy importante que su hijo/a se presente a la escuela diariamente. School starts at 8:50 A.M. –Instrucción comienza a las 8:50 AM. 10 Math The Math Milestones Test is taken in April. Topics for the first nine weeks are: number theory, whole number concepts, decimals, multiplication & division. La prueba de matemática del GMAS se toma en abril. Los tópicos de las primeras nueve semanas son: la teoría de los números y los decimales.

11 Reading Reading is a gateway to the GMAS Test. Research shows that children improve their reading skills by reading good literature often. Students are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes each night. Please indicate the amount of time your child reads during the week on their passport. Lectura La lectura es clave para pasar las pruebas del GMAS. Reportes investigativos muestran que los niños mejoran sus destrezas de lectura leyendo buena literatura con frecuencia. Animamos a nuestros niños a que lean por lo menos 20 minutos cada noche. Favor de indicar la cantidad de tiempo que su hijo lee cada semana en el pasaporte.

12 Writing We will use the Writer’s Workshop Model, and integrated instruction to help prepare students for the GMAS assessment. La Escritura Trabajaremos en Talleres de Escritura, Instrucción, e instrucción integrada para preparar a los estudiantes para esa prueba.

13 Science The topics for the first nine weeks are: classification of plants and animals, cells, learned behaviors vs. inherited traits Mrs. Christensen will teach science. 15 Homework Tareas We will assign homework. –Tareas serán asignadas We will notify you of any late assignments on the student’s passport and call you if work habits do not meet expectations. –Le notificaremos por medio del pasaporte si el estudiante tiene tares atrasadas y le llamaremos si los hábitos de estudios de el estudiantes no llenan las expectativas. Students must make-up missed work as soon as possible. –Se espera que todo trabajo atrasado sea completado con la mayor brevedad posible. 19 CogAT Cognitive Abilities Test The test is given to measure the development of abstract reasoning abilities through verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal assessment. Teachers use CogAT scores to determine if students are achieving to their potential and to identify their areas of strength. Date: September 15-17, 2014 Prueba de habilidades cognitivas Esta prueba se administra para medir el desarrollo de las habilidades del razonamiento abstracto a través de un diagnostico basado en lo verbal, lo cuantitativo, y lo no verbal. 22 Fifth Grade Privileges At the end of the year the fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in a few special events. (Fifth Grade Picnic, Field day, and Awards Ceremony). In order for the students to be able to participate, they must meet the following requirements. Students who do not meet the requirements will not be able to attend these events. Their CCRPI portfolio must be turned in to the counselors They must have exhibited good behavior through out the school year. Any student with poor behavior will be put on a behavior contract in April in order to try to earn the privilege. Al final del año los estudiantes de quinto grado tienen la oportunidad de participar en algunos eventos especiales. (Picnic de Quinto Grado, Días de Juego, y la ceremonia de entrega de premios). Para que los estudiantes sean capaces de participar, deben cumplir con los siguientes requisitos. Los estudiantes que no cumplan con los requisitos no podrán asistir a estos eventos. Su cartera de CCRPI debe ser entregado a las consejeras Deben de haber exhibido un buen comportamiento durante todo el año escolar. Cualquier estudiante con mal comportamiento será puesto en un contrato de comportamiento en abril con el fin de tratar de ganar el privilegio.

26 How can my student participate? By signing the parent handbook, students and parents agree that this device may only be used by students for teaching and learning activities. Students and parents must be aware that accessing inappropriate materials while at school is subject to local school procedures for disciplinary action, including confiscation of the device.

27 What if something happens to the device? Your student is responsible for ensuring that the device is safe and secure. Bethesda is not responsible for maintenance, damage, theft, usage or usage charges, or loss of this non- school-district equipment.
