What is My Liverpool? Phase 1:Web-based signposting resource that pulls together information about co- and extra-curricular activities that the University has to offer. For current and prospective students, as well as alumni. For UG, PGR and PGT students. Also aims to be educational and support the enhancement of the student experience in Liverpool (and other bases), by firstly identifying (Phase 1) and then ‘encouraging’ students (Phase 2) to reflect on the skills developed through participation in such activities. Information from My Liverpool will populate section 6.1 of the University of Liverpool HEAR.

My Liverpool portal four different entry search points – open search, social, subject area of interest, skills development Filter system culminating in relevant activities for the student depending on the choices made – system recognises level and dept/school of student – will highlight activities specifically designed for them (very important to PGRs in particular) Resource accessed via a tab in Liverpool Life (main student portal) for all students, and additionally within the ‘PGR toolbox’ for PGR students

Ongoing work for My Liverpool Phase 1Contacting departments/schools/corporate communications/museum etc to ‘collate’ current activity information. Develop sustainable system for ongoing updating Producing video diaries by U of L students – as promotion tool and information on the site (very positive feedback on these from UG focus groups) Cross-promotion communication – Liverpool Guild, My Liverpool Story, Careers & Employability Service etc; ‘Badging of ‘My Liverpool’ activities on dept/school websites

but, the My Liverpool web portal is only the first part of the process…

My Liverpool – Phase 2

Student Skills Folder/RepositorySituated in Pebble Pad (new e-portfolio system) Each student has individual ‘folder’ which will contain Activity records Reflective Skills Templates Artefacts (assets) repository

Components of Student Folder – Parts 1 & 2 Activity DescriptionPart 1 -automatically populated for students by activity owners using specific or generic protocols CSD designing spreadsheets for activity owners to collect data Download system being created where verified data is pushed/pulled into student folders E.g. Title Leadership Training Day Year Activity occurred Who owns the activity Careers & Employability Service What the activity involves This involved: Actively participating as a team member in a series of team-based activities Leading a team for one of the designated activities Attending the 7 hours of the course Attending a lecture on the theory of teamwork Skills Developed (from CBI/Dig Lit/RDF list) Oral communication skills; project management; teamwork

Part 2 – Student Written protocolsDesigned for students who may be involved with activities not organised by the university or the Guild Students will complete activity description (as part 1), and submit this with a compulsory reflective skills document, and where possible, details of someone who can provide an external reference. External reference will be requested Activity description, reflective skills record, any other supporting documentation, and reference will then be submitted for approval through internal verification process

Skills Frameworks - My Liverpool?Have developed a CLL list of Core Skills based on: CBI skills (basis of our Employability Strategy) Digital Literacy skills (JISC) Skills elements of RDF (Researcher Development Framework) for PGRs Future Additions ? ESD (Education for Sustainable Development Framework) Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

Components of Student Folder Parts 1 & 2 -Reflective Skills TemplateBusiness and customer awareness (CBI) Career and identity management online (DL) Communication (CBI/RDF) Communication and collaboration online (DL) Digital scholarship (DL) Global perspectives Information technology (application of) (CBI/DL) Information literacy online (DL) Learning skills online (DL) Literacy (CBI) Media literacy online (DL) Numeracy (application of) (CBI) Positive attitude/ self-confidence (CBI/RDF) Problem solving/ critical thinking/ creativity (CBI/RDF) Research management (RDF) Self-management (CBI/RDF) Team (group) working (CBI/RDF) Key: CBI = Confederation of British Industry DL = Digital Literacies (JISC) RDF = Researcher Development Framework (VITAE)

Part 3 Other activities that don’t meet protocol criteriaExamples PAL Leader for 4 sessions Attended individual careers seminars Volunteered to help out at local event for a couple of hours

Components of Student Folder – Part 4 ArtefactsEvidence to support skills development claims Examples could include Video Brochure Photos of products Etc.

Skills Folder Developments - ProgressTop level process defined Need to implement student skills folders in Pebble Pad CSD have designed spreadsheets to collect activity data (for University/Liverpool Guild owned activities) Next stage - CSD to design system whereby data from these spreadsheets can be downloaded, once verified by the activity owner, into each appropriate individual student’s skills folder.

Related developments Ongoing Focus groups with UGs, PGTs, PGRs re expectations of co- and extra curricular activities – information can be fed back to Faculties Lots of information re what is currently available across faculties/schools ( and ownership), and also how accessible this information is Additional research project to run over academic year to research needs, expectations and barriers to participation in University/Guild offered co- and extra- curricular activities for WP students (Scholars and Mature Students) Project group (involving colleagues from EO and C&ES) Interviews with prospective and current WP students

Activities UGs would like to seeCourse-specific activities Activities with academic staff Larger (university-wide) social events More opportunities for international and home students to interact

Activities PGTs would like to seeCourse-specific activities that enhance their professional development Access to other (related) PGT programme materials More opportunities for wider PGT student interaction across related programmes

Activities PGRs would like to seeInter-disciplinary events with social angle PGR-specific volunteering opportunities Links with the wider community Activities that help students to acclimatise to the local community More study skills sessions

Strategic Picture was information about the activity on a web page?Compiled tables of activities for each Faculty by school/department for each group of students – UG, PGT, PGR As part of information gathering exercise, also gathered data about how accessible information was about these activities: was information about the activity on a web page? If so, was it on a public web page as opposed to an intranet? If information was not web-based, where could (prospective and current) students find out about it? This information has now been picked up by Faculty Student Experience Leads for discussion/identification of developments in faculties.

Longer-term developmentsNext 12 months Implement Phase 2 – skills folders – for all students Work with the PGR Development team to integrate the Skills Folders with the Portfolio of Activity in the PGR Toolbox, in context of other PGR skills development activity 1-2 years Merger of skills profiles from module choices (information to be downloaded from Programme Planner) with skills profiles from co- and extra- curricular activities to produce overall profile.

Integration with other developmentsWith colleagues in Ed Dev/ELU Programme Planner (future) – dropping data/metrics from module choices into My Liverpool system; consistency of skills frameworks iLearn PGR processes supported by PGR development team Consistency with other strategies i.e. Employability strategy; Digital Literacies strategy; RDF for PGRs – consistency of frameworks for students (and staff) Other academic e-portfolio developments across the institution Colleagues external to Ed Dev/ELU My Liverpool Story team in SRAO Marketing and communications teams in departments/schools Developments (and systems) in Careers & Employability Service Liverpool Guild of Students developments
