Download Transfer (a file, program etc.) from a from a central "host" computer to peripheral often remote "client" computer E-learning Electronic learning. Instruction facilitated by the use of electronic technologies and digital tools to deliver or support teaching and learning. 13 Needs Assessment Needs AssessmentThe following contain useful information and resources for technology assessment and implementation: Career Tech (older/archived but still useful) US Department of Education
14 Needs Assessment The following questions may guide your selection of any educational technology: Identify your key Stakeholders Students - Professors - Visiting instructors Clinical Preceptors - Mentors - Administration What is the scope of the project(s) you wish to undertake? Determine the interests, values, and perspectives of the stakeholders regarding the addition of the technology to the curriculum Define the purpose/need for change/addition Technology is a tool; technology is NOT the message Make sure it is value added - no technology for technology’s sake Clearly define how technology will assist in meeting instructional objectives and learning outcomes Be aware how outcomes may drive the selection of the technology
15 Needs Assessment (continued)Recognize how technology can meet teaching styles "Information disseminator" vs. "learning facilitator" Ascertain technology proficiency of stakeholders Levels of technology preparedness Provide necessary training to update technology skills What is your technology infrastructure? Computers and peripherals - Software/applications Internet access Room design/features Content development resources Funding Current budget - Over the life of the plan Student vs. School What physical security measures are available in your program
16 Needs Assessment (continued)DIDACTIC YEAR/PHASE CLINICAL YEAR/PHASE 1o LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Usually synchronous Usually asynchronous 2o LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Independent/small group may lend itself to mixed synchronous and asynchronous styles Student may return to campus periodically allowing mixed synchronous & asynchronous 1o TOOLS AND APPS face-to-face (lecture) applicability distance (virtual) applicability LEARNING APPROACH “traditional” and E-learning M-learning LOCATION OF LEARNER usually determined often itinerant FEEDBACK usually rapid may be delayed RELATIONSHIP PROJECT/INFO & PRODUCT/APP longer term, building upon itself or repetitious often novel, short term “snippets”
