There are two types: Progress Command
PROGRESS ASSESSMENT We try to assess how the student is making progress We collect all types of data: compositions, exercises, oral participation, presentations… February exam: just an orientation for both teacher and student
COMMAND ASSESSMENT This refers to the exam you have to pass in order to get a certificate. You have to show that you possess a certain level. The exam is composed of 4 parts Each part has to be passed with a 60% The exam is graded and marked by your own teacher. Each schoolyear you have two opportunities: June and September If you fail one or more skills, you have to retake only those skills in September.
IMPORTANT If you pass all the skills in the mock exam in February, it will help you in June, given that: 1.You only fail one skill 2.You fail it with at least 13.
4. CLASS MECHANICS
Teaching philosophy statement “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” (W.B.Yeats) I don’t want to deliver but to engage, stimulate, provoke. Rather than teaching concepts, I want to facilitate learning.
DAILY LESSON PLAN We start by correcting any homework due (HW) Then we move on to our different activities: pairwork (PW), groupwork (GW), listening exercises, video, always trying to emphasize those aspect of the language that are more difficult to work at home on your own. Homework is shown on the screen.
5. OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM.
HOMEWORK Daily homework: exercises in the workbook, handouts, or any other material. It is corrected at the beginning of each lesson Compositions or other projects: you usually have longer than a week. You can hand your work in through e-mail (preferred)or more traditionally, on a piece of paper. See examples victoria. [email protected]
WORK ON YOUR OWN Apart from the homework assigned in class, each student must be responsible for their own learning, using all the possible opportunities to practise English: –Listening to English music actively –Watching movies, shows, documentaries in O.V. –Doing listening exercises or any other skills (see webpage) –Reading books, magazines, (see library) –Anything else you can think of (Vaughan, grammar, etc)
FOCUS ON… WRITING: Final exams show that this is one of the skills with the worst results SPEAKING: And this is the other one! Passive skills (reading and listening) are usually easier to acquire. Active skills take a lot of work (active work) on the part of the learner.
