10 ProStart® CompetitionMarch 28, 2013 – Radisson Hotel Providence Airport This annual Culinary Arts Competition brings together the top ProStart high school students from throughout the state and provides them the opportunity to show off their foodservice technical and management skills in a statewide competition. Teams face off in one of two competitions – culinary or management. For each respective competition, students must impress judges from various industry professions. The top three ranking teams from the culinary and management competitions are awarded medals and generous educational scholarships to help further their careers in the restaurant and foodservice industry. In addition, our first place teams have the opportunity to represent Rhode Island in the National ProStart Invitational held in Baltimore, MD. In our first competition, seven teams from Chariho Career & Technical Center, Cranston Area Career & Technical Center, and Exeter Job Corps Academy were judged in a variety of categories including safe food transportation, knife skills, 3-course meal preparation, and professionalism and teamwork. 11 Scholarship & Charitable GivingRepresentative Paul Crowley Memorial Scholarship and Stephen P. Marra Memorial Scholarship Representative Crowley was a tireless advocate for the hospitality and tourism industry in Rhode Island, as well as a proud member of the hospitality business community. Stephen P. Marra was a beloved Rhode Island restaurateur and former Chairman of the RI Hospitality Association. Stephen Marra owned six local eateries including: Cucina, Cucina Twist, Twist on Angel, Twist, Grille on Main and Waterplace. He is a past recipient of the RIHA’s Man of the Year Award and a long-time supporter of Meals on Wheels. Over the years, Steve has made countless product and monetary donations supporting child and youth development, education, health, arts and community improvement and other causes. He passed away in August 2011. To honor Representative Crowley and Stephen P. Marra, the RI Hospitality Education Foundation (RIHEF) created a scholarship fund. The Foundation bestows annual scholarship upon deserving high school seniors who seek a career in the hospitality, tourism or culinary industry. Charitable Giving We have worked with over 5,000 students since 2008 providing state-mandated food safety and alcohol service certification programs, preparing low-skilled adults to enter the Hospitality Industry and inspire local students to pursue a career with us. Educational opportunities provided by RIHEF are a cornerstone of the RI Hospitality Association (RIHA). However, due to a dramatic reduction in workforce development grants, our workforce development funding was reduced by a staggering $500,000 in 2011. The loss of this funding cannot be overstated, as it continues to have a profound impact on how we carry out the programs we offer. Your donation will help us provide scholarship funding to eligible students embarked on a career in the hospitality and tourism industries and continue to offer the industry training needed for career advancement..
