2 What the test checks forThe test checks a child’s ability to blend sounds and read words It does not test their ability to understand what they have read It test what the children have learnt and that they can use all the sounds from ‘Letters and Sounds’ up to the end of phase 5

3 Technical Terms Phoneme – 1 sound made by 1 or more letters (a/ch/igh)Grapheme – the way the sounds are written Digraph – 2 letters that make 1 sound (ch) Tri-graph – 3 letters that make 1 sound (igh) Split digraph – 2 letters that make 1 sound with a letter in between that splits them up (a_e bake)

5 Phonic Sounds There are many sounds, we split them up into phases 2, 3, 4 and 5 Phase 2 phonemes (s,a,t,p,i,n) Phase 3 phonemes (sh, ch, th) Phase 4 phonemes (st, br, tr) Phase 5 phonemes (many alternative sounds)

11 Test Results We do not know the pass score until weeks after the tests have been done The pass score has been 32/40 in previous years You will find out about your child’s score and if they have passed when you receive their ROA at the end of the year If your child does not pass they will need to take the test again in year 2 We take into consideration the phonic check score when awarding ‘working at year 1 expected’ for reading

12 How you can help Please help your child to recognise phonic sounds at home Use flash cards to make up words Spot sounds in words in books Practise sounding out different types of words at home Encourage them to have a go Make it fun
