At this assembly pupils will be issued with the ‘2017 Option Preference Form’ · Y9 Options Evening - Wednesday 18th January to provide parents and pupils with an outline of the Key Stage 4 Curriculum and other information to help them to support their child in their Key Stage 4 option choices. 38 Options: A ‘health’ warning?The Curriculum is made up of two parts: The Compulsory Core = 60% The Options = 40% Option choices are, in reality, possibly a little bit more limited than we may have at first expected.

41 Points to Consider Separate Sciences?As part of the compulsory curriculum all pupils with study for Combined Sciences (2 GCSE’s) However, if a pupil chooses Separate Sciences as one of their options, this will then convert their Combined Sciences to Biology, Chemistry and Physics i.e. the pupil will receive 3 science GCSEs: one in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Please note: a pupil doing this will still have 3 other options to choose.

42 Points to Consider Is English Express for me?This option is appropriate for students who would benefit from spending time reinforcing their English skills. It is not a qualification in its own right, but will support the core English. Students are requested to speak to Mr Belger before choosing this option to discuss whether it is suitable for them. The English Express option will, on the whole, follow the Foundation GCSE Courses

43 History, Geography, French, GermanPoints to Consider History, Geography, French, German Students who are considering going on to Further or Higher Education should seriously consider choosing at least one subject from French, German, History, Geography. At St Bede’s, most pupils have in previous years included at least one of these subjects in their portfolio and many have included more than one from this list. For this reason, pupils in achievement groups 1 – 4 have a restricted choice. However, for some learners, continuing to study a humanities subject (History or Geography) and/or a modern foreign language (French or German) may not be appropriate and in those cases alternative ‘pathways’ are offered. If you or your child are in any doubt about this, you should raise this with his/her History, Geography, French, German teacher on parents’ evening. You may also contact the Heads of the respective Departments if you require further advice. Some universities and employers may give preference to pupils who have achieved a Grade 5 or better in each of the above subjects. However there appears to be no consistency between universities and employers as to the stance they take on this.

44 Points to Consider Is a college course for me?The 14 – 16 college option is for pupils for whom a less academic route is appropriate. Some pupils benefit from a vocational approach to education. Traditionally only a very small number of pupils at St. Bede’s consider this pathway. Please be aware that choosing the college option is in place of choosing two option subjects.
