Historiador Alvin Schmidt Moral depravity and prostitution were normal as was bisexual and homosexual male prostitution. What is deemed vice in the scripture, prostitution, homosexuality, infidelity infanticide was virtue in Greco-Roman culture. [1] Schmidt; pg. 102

Relación: Hombres a MujeresRoma: 131 hombres / 100 mujeres Imperio Romano: 140 hombres / 100 mujeres Women were so despised in Greco Roman Society “that there were 131 males per 100 females in the city of Rome, and 140 males per 100 females in Italy, Asia Minor and North Africa.”[1] The war on women was alive and well in Jesus day. [1] Stark, Rodney; The Rise of Christianity; ??????; pg. 97.

[1] Quoted in Hamilton, David; pg. 77

The Greek dualistic construct of the universe, articulated by Plato and his followers, conceived of the universe in divide in two; the spiritual and the physical. The spiritual is high and the physical is low. This dualistic thining was applied to the role of men and women as well; Mardi Keyes writes: “The male was associated with mnd, reason, spirit, soul and ruling; the female was associated with body, flesh, sex, reproduction, domesticity and subordination. THe male was superior, the female inferior. Men were human and male (male=human); women were female only –defined by sex and reproduction (whether wives, concubines, slaves or prostitutes).”[1] [1] Keyes, Mardi; orange black purple pg. 6 [1] Quoted in Hamilton; pg. 77

Me has mandado palabra: ´No te olvides de mi´. Cómo te puedo olvidar. Te ruego no te preocupes por mi.” A touching love letter of a Roman soldier named to his wife Alis shows the callous attitude of the Romans to their daughters

While a Roman woman had more freedom than her Greek sister, when compared with men, she had virtually no rights and privileges [1] Schmidt; pg. 100

¡Dios gracias por no haberme hecho gentíl, mujer o esclavo!Oración Judía ¡Dios gracias por no haberme hecho gentíl, mujer o esclavo! Section Menahoth 43b-44a of the Talmud states that : A Jewish man is obligated to say the following prayer every day: Thank you God for not making me a Gentile, a woman or a slave

Jesus ben Sirach a Jewish scholar living in Egypt wrote about 180 B.C. In the Book of Sirach he makes the following comments about women:

Rabbi Eliezer, "Mishnah, Sotah 3:4" Rabbi Eliezer wrote in the 1st century CE The world into which Jesus was born was hostile to women. Whether from the smaller Jewish sub culure or the larger Greco-Roman culture, women were seen as inferior to men. Often they were seen as property and were treated as such. What was Jesus’ attitude to the predominate meta- narratives of His day? What was his attitude to the way women were treated? Did he accept the status quo? Or did He challenge it?

Autora Dorothy Sayers [1] Quoted in orange-green, pg 90

Autora Dorothy Sayers

Las Genealogías de JesúsLucas da la línea de sangre paterna – que llega hasta José Mateo da la línea real - legal de aquellos que eran o podrían llegar a ser los reyes que se sentarían en el trono de David Woman in his linage “A genealogy in the OT sense is a list of names indicating the ancestors or descendants of an individual or individuals, or simply a registration of the names of people concerned in some situation.”[1] No O.T. Genealogy would include a women and none would a foreign woman. The list normally is a passing from father to son, tracing linage through male ancestry. In the case of a King, it is tracing royalty. Breaking into the royal line of kings are four women and certainly they were not all royalty: They were all Gentiles And in fact they were all known for their sin. [1]The New Bible Dictionary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.) 1962.

Ruth a Moabites. The Moabites were the pagan worshippers of Baal. (Deut 23:3-5). They had failed to help the Hebrew people in their hour of need and instead had put a curse on them. Because of this, “No Ammonite or Moabite or any of his descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even down to the tenth generation.’ [1]

Her name does not appear, simply her identity She was the wife of Uriah, David’s loyal commander. With the “murder” of Uriah by David, What is remarkable about this list is that All four women had “troubled pasts” for any genealogy none the less the royal line for the Messiah: One guilty of incest, one of prostitution, one of being a foreigner and an enemy of Israel, and one being an adulteress. The four “sinners” were grafted into the royal blood line. How befitting when we read that the royal blood of Jesus is shed for making of Jew and Gentile, one new man (Ephesians 2:11-18). Considering God’s Husbanding the harlot Israel. As we have just seen in the book of Hosea, it is befitting the blood of “sinful” – gentile -women was called from all eternity to be part of the royal blood that is shed on the cross. What an amazing story!

Lilian Calles Barger "Eve's Revenge" (La Venganza de Eva) Some church traditions have “super-sized” Mary, making her bigger than life. She has been elevated to the Mother of God. She is seen as divinely perfect and for-ever a virgin. Calles Barger calls us back to reality [1] ? ; Eve’s Revenge; ??????; pg. 153

Lilian Calles Barger Jesus will live for nine months in the womb He created. He will pass the a human birth cannel he will be nurtured at human breasts. All the things that we are loathed to talk about, blood, tissue, fluids, become sanctified by the habitation of the Almighty. The Divine, visiting the ordinary, sanctifies the common. All that Sexism and Feminism diminishes, God raises up in the womb-life, birth and breast nurturing of the Son of God. [1] ibid Eve’s Revenge pg. 154

In Jesus day it was considered improper for a woman to speak to a man in public if he was not her husband. The disciples register this in John 4:27.

Sin Doble Criterio Lea Preguntas Mateo 5:28 Juan 8:3-11 Marcos 10:5-9¿Sobre cuáles áreas de doble criterio trato Jesús? ¿Cómo las trato? In the area of lust, there was a double standard. Jesus says that if a man looks in lust at a woman he has committed adultery in his heart (Matt. 5:28). Marti Keyes has said it very well: “In a culture which blamed woman’s very nature for male lust, Jesus put the blame where it belonged – on the men who looked lustfully at women!”[1] A man’s inner demeanor is to be disciplined to purity. His external manner towards women is to be respectful and honoring. [1] Keyes , purple-orange; pg 11 In the area of adultery, there was a double standard. Hebrew male we arrogant. Remember they thanked God that they were not gentiles, women or slaves. There contempt for women pours from every pore of their body. We see this so clearly in John 8:3-11, the Jews were ready to stone the woman caught in adultery. In the area of divorce their was a double standard. Jewish men had the ability to divorce their wives for almost any reason. Simply by writing a simple declaration of divorce. There was no judicial process to go through to protect the rights of the wife. Remember the woman is the property of the man and has few rights. It was almost impossible for a woman to institute the divorce.

He Treated women as human beings Jesus did not view women as sex objects. He saw them as imago Dei, and he treated them as human beings. Why did women flock to Jesus? Simply because he treated them with dignity. Note, Jesus did not give women dignity. He recognized the intrinsic dignity in their being and function because they are imago Dei. Similarly men cannot give women dignity. It is not their place. Women already have dignity because of who and whose they are. Mencan only recognize the dignity inherent in women and then treat them with the respect that they deserve. When he addressed them, he spoke to them tenderly, in a way that would touch their soul, in a way that he would identify with them. TO the woman who was crippled he addressed her “daughter of Abraham” (Luke 13:16). Men were sometimes addressed as “sons of Abraham.” But for Jesus to address this woman as a daughter of Abraham was to turn the world upside down.

He Ministered to Women Jesus valued women and demonstrated this by ministering to their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs. As he addressed then needs of men where their lives were broken, he did the same for women. He did not favor men in this ministry but treated the needs of both women and men with equal care.

[1]The New International Version, (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House) 1984.

Las Mujeres Ministraron a JesúsNo lo abandonaron en la cruz Ellas cuidaron de su cuerpo en el sepulcro Anunciaron su resurrección They did not abandon him at the cross The twelve were almost a pitiful lot as Jesus death approached. They were not thinking of Jesus and how they could help him, they were only thinking of themselves. It was the women who showed courage, love and care for Jesus. The Mother-heart of God was manifested through these gritty women. Many were at the cross, “watching from a distance” (Matt 27:55-56; Mark 15:40). Some stood at the foot of the cross (John 19:25). They came to care for his body in the tomb All four gospels paid honor to the women who came to the tomb to do a proper burial anointing (Matt. 28:5-8; Mark 16:5-8; Luke 24:2-9; John 20:1-2). They announced His resurrection It was women, those who had the courage to stay with Jesus to the end, that God chose to make the first announcements of the good news of Jesus resurrection.

This was a critical moment in Jesus ministry, he was going to chose those whom he would set apart from all the rest, those with authority, those he “named” apostles. Why did he not choose 12 women. There were, abviously many godly, humble, gifted women with leadership ability among his followers. Why did he not choose twelve women to be apostles? Why not half men and half women? Why was he not “demeaning” and chose a token women to be an apostle? Jesus not choosing women was not a lapse on his part. He had spent the night n prayer. Jesus was a revolutionary. He overthrew the counterfeit order of Sexism of male superiority and male tyranny. He overturned the corrupt order that crushed women and treated them as property. In His words and in his life he restored the dignity of women. He treated them with the honor and respect that they were due as women and as the imago Dei.

He did not call for the obliteration of distinctives and the reversal of the Creation order. He would call men to loving-serving-headship and women to loving-respectively-helping. He would liberate women to be all that God intends for them to be. He would call forth their giftings and their leadership. But he came to do this within the framework of the Trinitarian Order. In the home (husband) and in the church (Eldership), the loving-serving-headship resides with the man.

Appropriately, the gates which protect the city are masculine, the foundations that support the city are masculine But the city herself is represented by feminine images
