Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty,Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Bokshin ChoiPsalms 110 1 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." 2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies. 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you will receive the dew of your youth. 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

Matthew Chapter 24 1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" 4 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

Matthew Chapter 24 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. 9 "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Matthew Chapter 24 15 "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel-let the reader understand- 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now-and never to be equaled again.

Matthew Chapter 24 22 If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect-if that were possible. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time. 26 "So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

Matthew Chapter 24 29 "Immediately after the distress of those days " 'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' 30 "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. 32 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.

Matthew Chapter 24 34 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 36 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Matthew Chapter 24 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. 45 "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?

Matthew Chapter 24 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,' 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Signs of Christ’s Coming – Part 4 Perils to Come Matthew 24: 16 - 28“So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (24:26-27)

Jesus’ final public sermon – False Spiritual Leaders Olivet Discourse - Jesus leaves the Temple, goes to the Mount of Olives and talks with His disciples about his second coming

Olivet Discourse – Matthew 24 – 25Mount of Olives

The Olivet Discourse Matthew 24 – 25Commonly known as the Olivet Discourse Delivered to the disciples on the Mount of Olives Theme – Christ’s second coming Prompted by disciples’ question in 24:3 – “Tell us, when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Answer is the longest given to any question asked in the New Testament

Overview of Verses 16 - 28 More perils to come prior to His returnVerses – What should be the response to the abomination that causes desolation? Verses – Additional perils that will accompany His return John MacArthur – True meanings of these verses are unclear

The Response (vv ) “Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.” (24:16-20) Abomination that causes desolation will initiate the first series of dangers – birth pains The Great Tribulation – 3-1/2 years Verse 16 – “Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains” Warning of severity of the holocaust to come Flee from it!! Take refuge in the mountains

Flee to the Mountains Severity of the holocaust (verse 16)“And it will come about in all the land,” declares the Lord, “that two parts of it will be cut off and perish; but the third will be left in it.” (Zech. 13:8) “Unequalled since the beginning of the world until now – and never to be equaled again” (Matt. 24:21) John “saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained” (Rev. 6:9)

Don’t Delay for Anything!Call for urgency – Verses 17-20 Don’t take time to get anything out of your house Don’t take time to even get your cloak Not the time to take a stand for Christ; just flee into His arms Pray nothing slows you down: Tragic time for pregnant women, nursing mothers with small children – cannot move fast Winter weather can slow you down Fleeing on the Sabbath – Legalistic Jews might try to impede your flight

The Perils (vv. 21-28) Three more signs of Christ’s returnSever Calamity (vv ) Subtle Confusion (vv ) Sinful Corruption (v. 28)

Severe Calamity (vv ) “For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now – and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.” (24:21-22) Abomination of desolation marks the beginning of great distress – last 3-1/2 years before Christ returns to rule the world Distress unequaled in past or future Time of distress described in Rev. 6 – 16 Seal, trumpet, and bowl judgments – escalating intensity of God’s wrath upon sinful, rebellious mankind Daniel and Revelation say Antichrist will tyrannize the world for “a time, times, and half time” – 3-1/2 years God’s message – Things are going to get much worse before they become better

Subtle Confusion (vv. 23-27)“At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect – if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as the lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (24:23-27) False teachers representing Satan will infiltrate those who flee Try to entice Jews and believers away from their refuge and into the hands of the Antichrist Perform great signs and miracles – mimic the Antichrist Deceive even the elect – if that were possible Not possible to deceive the elect about the identity of their Lord

How will they know His true coming?“For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man” (v. 27) Jesus’ coming will be: quick, sudden, public, visible, universal, and unimaginably glorious Acts 1:11 – “This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you watched him go into heaven” Rev. 1:7 – “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”

Sinful Corruption (v. 28) Possibly a common proverb in Palestine“Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.” (24:28) Possibly a common proverb in Palestine Carcass is symbolic of the world Filled its measure of sin Spiritually decayed into a wretched and virtually lifeless carcass Christ will appear to make final disposition of that carcass through His righteous and terrible judgment

Conclusion For those who belong to Him, Christ’s coming will be marvelous deliverance For those who resisted and opposed Him, it will be the ultimate day of tragedy

Last Week’s Verse “So when you see standing in the holy place the abomination that causes desolation spoken of through the prophet Daniel – let the reader understand” (24:15)

This Week’s Verse “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (24:26-27)

Today’s phrase So when you see standing in the holy place the abomination that causes desolation spoken of through the prophet Daniel – let the reader understand. So when you see ___________________, let ________ understand. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. Wherever there is a ____________, there the ________ will __________.

This Week’s ConversationA: When is Jesus coming back? B: When is Jesus coming back? That’s a good question. Nobody knows. But there will be signs. And Jesus himself said that the signs will be like birth pains. A: What do you mean by birth pains? B: You know when a woman bears a child she goes through a labor. And the pain does not occur at conception or during pregnancy, but begins shortly before birth, with increasing frequency until the baby is born. A: Right. B: Just like that the signs of Jesus’ second coming will begin just before His return, with increasing rapidity, building to an explosion of catastrophic events. A: I see what you mean now.
