9 Program Information The Second Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders Program is ideal for those seeking a career in Speech Pathology who possess bachelor’s degrees in fields other than Speech Pathology and Audiology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, or Communication Disorders. Accelerated 16 month format with 46 units complete with lecture, laboratory and clinical coursework.

24 Speech-Language Pathologists are professionals who provide services to…prevent diagnose evaluate as well as treat communication, swallowing and other related disorders.

25 Speech-language pathologists (SLP) and speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs) work with lots of different types of people, including: Infants through elderly Diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds Individuals with a variety of disorders

38 CSAD 2B Audience The program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than Speech Pathology and Audiology or Communication Sciences and Disorders or Communicative Disorders. The 16 month format is ideal for those that wish to make a career change. Participants will complete 46 units in lecture, laboratory and clinical coursework. Upon completion of the program, participants will earn a Bachelor of Science and be eligible to apply for California Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Licensure and to apply and compete for enrollment in the Sacramento State Master of Science in Speech Pathology program, or any other Speech Pathology or Communication Disorders program for which this equivalency is accepted.

39 Structure Participants will complete 46 units in lecture, laboratory and clinical coursework. Courses are offered as face-to-face instruction at the Sacramento State campus. Students will complete lab/skills and clinical courses utilizing face-to-face traditional teaching strategies for skills labs and direct-client contact experiences.

As a CCE student they do not have access to The Well as a campus student does since CCE fees do not cover The Well. If they would like access to The Well, they would need to join as a Sac State affiliate and pay a $33 monthly fee. As a student with a One Card, I believe they can be seen at the medical center but must be referred out to another doctor or specialist.

42 Credit for Previous CourseworkOccasionally, students have been given credit for equivalent coursework that has been previously passed, based on faculty review of syllabi. Contact Dr. Pieretti if you feel you have taken a previous course that is equivalent to a CSAD2B course. Students must earn a minimum of 30 units at Sacramento State to earn the Second Bachelor’s Degree

Be sure to read the readings at least several times Visualize what you are reading. Study with other people Recite and write Study a little every day Every course unit = 3 hours of studying outside of class a week. 3-unit class = 9 hours studying/homework DO THE READINGS BEFORE CLASS Make flashcards for key terms. Carry these flashcards everywhere you go and review them whenever you have a minute. Do not rewrite the definition in your own words!

48 Preparing to apply to Graduate Programs in Communications Sciences and Disorders/ Speech Pathology

49 Grades Overall GPA is important, however more important for applying to the Speech Pathology M.S. program at Sacramento State is GPA in the major coursework. Students must have an overall GPA of 2.75 and a 3.00 in the major

50 Do I Need to Have Taken Physics or Chemistry?It is strongly recommended that students have completed a course in physics and/or chemistry as they may be required later on when applying to a master’s program.

51 Multicultural ExperienceDefined as: Experience with ethnic and minority groups, bilingualism, multilingualism and signing. A prolonged pattern of involvement with multicultural populations, including work with populations relevant to the field and/or speaking another language or signing fluently and/or working primarily in a language other than English.

52 Work/Volunteer ExperienceTeaching, tutoring, school aides, SLPA, speech aide, research, social work, counseling, daycare, work with the elderly, work in nursing homes, work with individuals with disabilities, etc. A prolonged pattern of involvement directly related to our field and/or populations relevant to the field.

55 Letters of RecommendationStart making yourself visible to the faculty now. In the fall of your senior year you will need to request letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation, and two of these must come from professors in speech-language pathology or communication disorders. The third letter may come from a professor in speech-language pathology or communication disorders, an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist or an employed professional in a related field.
