Thank you for taking time out of your busy day and spending your evening with me tonight. I want to clarify with you all the expectations for finalizing the IB diploma so your student will get the most out of the program.
Agenda Introductions Is the IB Diploma right for me?TOK (Theory of Knowledge) and Extended Essay Requirements CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) Internal work and deadlines Malpractice Consequences Requirements for Achieving the Diploma Individual test schedule 2014 IB fees/AP fees, registration, refunds College Applications and Recommendations Here is the agenda for tonight. I hope we are not too late for some of you with these topics about the core and subject courses along with the big idea of is IB right for me…but better to be certain now rather than later.
Mr. Will Mynster, Principal Mrs. Sonje Burg, APIOMrs. Charlotte Kirkpatrick IB Coordinator Mr. Will Mynster, Principal Mrs. Sonje Burg, APIO I would like to introduce our new administrators to you. We all work together to make this program a success and we want your students to be successful here at Troy and in their future college and career goals. Dr. Amy Avina is our new Principal, she has come to us from Segerstrom High School where she created an environment that fostered a true dedication and push for success and led her school to the first ever Santa Ana school achieving over an 800 API! She even shaved her head as incentive for the kids. Dr. Danielle Kenfield is our new AP of Instruction and Operations. She comes to us from within the district and has taken the drive through Fullerton as she has taught at and been an administrator at Sunny Hills and then moved down to Fullerton High School and now we have the pleasure of having her here with us at Troy. My office is always open while I am here. Please feel free to call, or stop by if you have a question or need.
Is the IB Diploma right for me?Workload Credit from UC’s and other universities School grades vs. IB grades Remember why you chose IB! This may be a little late but for better or worse you are here in your final year of the Diploma Program. So now what? What do I get out of all this?
Workload LOTS! Especially as you begin to work on your Applications for Colleges and your Internal Assessment’s. Budget your time wisely and make sure all Internal Assessments are completed on time. Complete your CAS requirements (due April 21, 2017 EE 1st draft due September 15. Final EE (due November 16, 2015) There is nothing that says you must stay a full diploma candidate Well for many seniors they look forward to senior year as their coast year…not so for IB seniors! I will discuss CAS and IA more later Always do your best! Continue to find and do the things you love! Don’t give up 2nd semester, you’ve worked too hard to loose out on the full diploma!
IB Credit at UC Students who complete the IB diploma with a score of 30 or above will receive 30 quarter (20 semester) units toward their UC degree. Students who receive IB certificates with scores of 5,6 or 7 on Higher Level exams will receive 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units. Students who enter the UC with IB credit do not have to declare a major earlier than other students, nor are they required to graduate earlier. Will not duplicate AP credit! Most Colleges will accept IB scores for units, some for scholarship, but it must be researched by you because all colleges/universities are unique in their IB policy. This should be part of your college search on Naviance!! Other universities will vary, for example University of Nebraska, Lincoln will offer you anywhere from units of credit and up to $50,000 for your IB diploma (including giving you credit for SL classes) Many colleges give more credit, some give only elective credit, others give almost none! Make sure you look at the colleges you are applying to so you know what you will be able to receive from them for IB. NO promises here. However, don’t forget the importance of being able to say you completed the most rigorous program we offer. Plus, the colleges recognize that students that complete the full diploma are better prepared for and more likely to complete college.
Grades TOK CAS Extended Essay IB subject grades aredetermined by IB and are based on: Internal Assessment (teacher moderated) External Assessment (IB examiner graded) 1-7 point scale TOK CAS Extended Essay Class grades Based on Teacher grading guidelines and may be different than AP or IB grades Include all required student work and exams and on time completion of required IB internal assessments. (detentions will be given) Class grades do not change based on IB/AP grade received School grades and IB grades are not interchangeable. Just because you passed the diploma doesn’t mean you deserve an “A” in the class! You earn your grades at school based on teacher evaluations and assessments, you earn your IB grades based on Internal and external assessment moderated by IB graders. Included in determination of Diploma Anything not completed may result in a student not receiving a certificate for that subject and possibly the loss of the opportunity to receive the diploma. No refunds will be given for students’ failure to comply.

Final polishing of Internal assessment this year. (essay) No E’s !! We had a change in instructor this year so there will be some time needed to adjust to a new way of doing Philosophy and ToK. That being said, Mrs. Hinman was the most obvious and best choice for the job! However, she is going on maternity leave in September. We have, however, She is going to do a fantastic job preparing you for the IB exam in Philosophy and your ToK essays.

The Diploma Matrix (possible 3 Bonus points toward the Diploma)An Excellent will award an extra point bonus point which is why there are 3 bonus points for the combination.
CAS (Creativity, Action, Service)Must be completed online at Final due date – April 21, 2017 Meet with me once each semester. Must have a detailed record of experiences to clear the diploma on Managebac. Meet with me at the end to finalize your summary reflection and clear with IB. I need to be real clear here. IB requires a journal, record of experiences with the 150 hours of CAS; with about 50 hours in each area, as a minimum. This means that I need a detailed record of the experiences that your student has had over the last two years in CAS. Many of our students still have a number of hours to complete along with their CAS project. If IB calls for verification of the CAS hours they will expect to see a “sample” of their reflections/ records of experience that they say should be at least 10 pages… I also need a formal reflection piece that highlights their completion of the 8 learning outcomes based on their experiences.
Internal assessments and deadlinesDue dates established by individual teachers and me. Most will require submission to Calendar of due dates will be compiled and shared by the end of September. They are due to IB in March and April so I will be collecting it all before that time. NO rescheduling! All subject areas have unique forms of internal assessment: Science: Labs Computer Science and design tech: projects both have a group 4 project as well World languages and English: Oral exams and written tasks Business: paper Math: projects, new this year will be open ended HOA: paper Art: studio work Your teachers will be monitoring this part of your diploma. Malpractice rules apply here as well!
Malpractice Collusion: How to avoid it… Plagiarism: How to avoid it…Discuss your work with others, but don’t give anyone a hard copy, and under no circumstances whatsoever give anyone an electronic copy. Plagiarism: How to avoid it… You must reference your sources AND You must make it clear which words are not your own No extensive quotes; no very close paraphrasing Malpractice is any attempt to gain unfair advantage, and there are many possible scenarios. However, the vast majority fall into two categories: Collusion and Plagiarism. These two practices are most often committed by accident; so all students, no matter how honest, need to pay close attention. I should also tell you that your honor, integrity, intentions, university aspirations, standings in the school, fashion sense, hair-style are of no import. It’s what you do or what you have done that counts, not what a good person you are. Collusion is defined as “supporting malpractice by another candidate, as in allowing one’s work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another”. Plagiarism involves the use of another person’s words or ideas without proper recognition. Let me explain what this means in practice: If you are found guilty, both you and the school would be asked to make statements. These tend to be something like: IB coordinator statement: “This is an honest student with no record of cheating or indeed any poor behavior at this school. I cannot believe this was intentional. When asked the candidate was genuinely confused and upset; he immediately told me he recognized the website but had rushed the essay because he had missed the deadline and it was as a result of this that this paragraph ended up in the essay. The student is a senior prefect and a model member of the community; he has not once in his 7 years here committed any offense of this sort. In addition he has some serious medical issues which mean that he has not been fully focused on work as he normally is. We would therefore ask you to overlook this single misdemeanor. IB candidate statement: “I can see this looks like intentional plagiarism, but it was not. You can see from my bibliography that I had cited several works and had no intention of pretending that other people’s ideas were my own. This was a mistake because I was in a rush ; I had cut and pasted notes into my Word document for reference and obviously overlooked this paragraph. In addition I should tell you that I have been seriously ill (see attached doctors letter) during the time of the coursework. Please accept my apologies; I need my Diploma for University entrance and really hope you can be lenient; or perhaps just give me a very low grade for TOK.’ However, neither of these circumstances could be taken into account. The findings would be based on the evidence of the work, and if you were found guilty of Collusion or Malpractice then you would be disqualified. Both result in no grade for the subject concerned and hence no Diploma for that session
Consequences You may lose the option of receiving the full diploma and being able to test in a subject this May if: ANY internal or external requirements were not completed on time ANY malpractice is discovered (especially after signing the declaration on the coversheet) ANY disregard to the Learner Profile and the Mission of the IB. If this happens there is no refund in the costs of the exams!
Requirements for Achieving the full IB Diploma? At least 24 points overall Grades in all six subjects (no N’s or E’s) plus EE and TOK All CAS requirements met (cleared by me) At least a grade of D or better in EE and TOK (no E’s) No grade of 1 in any subject No more than 2 marks of 2 in any subject (Hl or SL) No more than 3 marks of 3 or below in any subject (HL or SL) 12+ points in HL (if 4 HL then the 3 highest points will be counted), 9+ points in SL (if 2 SL must gain at least 5 points) Not judged by IB guilty of Malpractice.
Individual test scheduleIB Schedule Friday 28 April and the last day is Friday 19 May AP Schedule 1 May through 12 May The potential for overlap is great. I will closely work with AP coordinator to minimize conflicts; however, with the new calendar we may be limited on AP makeups so choices may have to be made. **I cannot make changes for sports or other competitions. . I will work closely with the AP exam coordinator to minimize conflicts. I will not be making changes for sports or competitions that interfere with the exams. You will have to miss the exam and not receive the diploma or miss the event
2017 IB fees/AP fees, registration, refundsAP fees: $92.00 per exam paid in Spring You must know what exams you are going to take, no refunds will be offered! IB Fees: $ per exam, $ for registration, if didn’t pay last year. Senior Plaque (yours) $ (optional) These are non-refundable fees (any changes after November 1 will incur additional fees) IB registration and payment of fees will be done October 11-18, 2014 in the Activities office. The form you picked up tonight is the fee schedule for the exams. I have also included the list of exams your student has been pre-registered. If there are any discrepancies have your student see me before they pay for the exams. After registration I will ask that you all sign and verify your information, as that is how it will be printed on all your documents, including the diploma. Last day for any changes will be Nov. 1, 2013
Donations We ship IB exams/IA all over the world to be graded. If you would be so inclined as to make a donation equivalent to $40 per exam ($160/4 exams or $200/5 exams or any additional amount you would be willing to donate) it would go a long way toward offsetting the expenses that Troy will incur. This can be added to your fee sheet you picked up tonight and pay for in October. There is no obligation to pay! We have, in previous years, charged parents to help pay for the administration of the exams, shipping fees, IA fees, EE fees, binding of IB EE. With the recent developments from the supreme court and the ACLU lawsuit we can no longer require that parents pay for these services. The school has now assumed responsibility for all these expenses. It will be covered from some source, yet to be discovered. If you would be so inclined as to make a donation equivalent to $40 per exam ($160/4 exams or $200/5 exams) it would go a long way toward offsetting the expenses that Troy will incur. This can be added to your fee sheet you picked up tonight. There is no obligation to pay! We are no longer putting up individual plaques in the office. Beginning with this last year’s graduating class we are putting up a single class plaque with all the student’s names in the office. However, you are free to still order your own personal plaques for your homes and I will make sure they are available next fall at the honors at entrance event. Remember your student can earn up to a full year of school credit (30 units) upon admission to a UC as well as other universities, isn’t that worth a little money up front to support Troy’s IB program.
