Recruiter Interaction: Their PerspectiveWho are the recruiters? HR or Hiring Manager Employees from specific positions UF Alumni Recruiting is mundane & repetitive Hundreds of candidates Thousands of resumes Hours of talking Be yourself! Its okay to be nervous.
Recruiter Interaction: BasicsUse Resume as Outline Name, Year, Major Objective Why are you talking to them? Qualifications Experience, Skills, Projects Why should they hire you? Questions for Recruiters Are you enthusiastic about this company? Essentially an elevator pitch: 30-second speech that tells the recruiter why you are a good candidate, what you have to offer KNOW YOUR RESUME: Be able to speak about each item clearly and concisely - you will be asked about things on your resume.
Recruiter Interaction: AdvancedThree-Point Approach Requires more prior research Company Drop fact or ask insightful question Objective What position do you want within the company? 26 S/T A R Interviews: Strategy Answer with STAR Using STARSituational/Task Action Result Using STAR Be specific Quantify when possible Avoid using “We” Don’t reuse experiences Must prepare answers in advance! S/T A R Avoid using “We” – the interviewer wants to know how YOU accomplished or completed something, not others You can have ideas written down with you, even for in-person interviews. ALWAYS have answers prepared for the standard questions (to come)
Interviews: Answers Split into Two Categories Use STAR StrategyPositive Experience – times when you accomplished something, went above and beyond, etc. Negative Experience – times when you had to overcome obstacles, adverse force acting on you, etc. Use STAR Strategy At least three answers for each category Try to frame negatives experiences in a positive light Reiterate having answers prepared in advance
Interviews: BehavioralWhat? Situational questions about past experiences Evaluates suitability beyond skills and work history Generally avoids hypothetical questions Why? Past experience is best predictor of future performance Focuses on the 80% compatibility
Interviews: The Tricky QuestionGreatest weakness questions Tests self-awareness Worst answers: I’m perfect or answering with a major flaw (i.e. I can’t meet deadlines) Strategy: Offer a weakness the employer already knows (i.e. lack of technical knowledge) Use a flaw that is only a flaw in excess (i.e. not delegating enough) Show how you’re improving. “Do you have any questions?” Have a question.
Interviews: TechnicalDetermine candidate’s: Technical Knowledge “Do you have the knowledge required?” Analytical Skills “Can you understand and quantify problems?” Problem-Solving Process “Can you solve complex problems?” Creativity “Are you more useful than a computer?” Communication Skills “Can you explain your ideas to others?” They have a resource packet.
