1 Stinky Feet FSA Review Editionthe game that’s ½ Skill, ½ Strategy, and ½ Luck

2 The Rules There are four teams of 3-6 players each. Teams sit together in a group. Teams take turns answering the questions or following the prompts that appear on the slides. Only one person may answer for the team. A new person must answer each time. The first answer given is what will be assessed as correct or incorrect; teams may not amend (change) their answers after they have responded. IF TEAMS ANSWER CORRECTLY: They must collect both a CHIP (which has a number between -12 and 12 on it) and a LETTER (A-Z). Chips cannot be looked at until the end of the game. Letters may be looked at after they have been chosen, but must be selected at random. IF TEAMS ANSWER INCORRECTLY: The other teams will have an opportunity to STEAL. STEALING: Teams will have fifteen seconds to determine the correct answer. When a team believes they have the correct answer, they must raise their hand. The first team to raise a hand will be allowed to answer first and so on. If the team is correct, they may steal one CHIP and one LETTER from the team who initially answered the question. Teams alternate turns until time or the question set runs out.

3 Winning the game At the end of the question portion of gameplay, teams will have one minute and thirty seconds to use their LETTERS to spell the longest word possible. The team who spells the longest word will be allowed to look at their chips and calculate their total score. The team who spells the longest word will also choose either “LOW” or “HIGH.” If the team chooses LOW, the team with the lowest score wins the game. If the team chooses HIGH, the team with the highest score wins the game. After LOW or HIGH has been chosen, all teams will tally their totals (based on the numbers on their CHIPS) to determine the winning team.

We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. We bring it out into the open, where it can be seen and dealt with. Like a boil that can never be cured so long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.” What is the purpose of King’s analogy? To show how disgusting the opposition’s behavior is. To share an important memory of his time in jail. To better explain that nonviolent direct action is a necessary step to solve the problem of racism, despite criticisms of it. To directly criticize nonviolent direct action as ‘ugly.’

41 Read the following excerpt from an informative article about hibernation: “Nearly everything about the way an animal’s body works changes when it hibernates, and preparations start weeks or months in advance. The first order of business is to fatten up. “Fat is where it’s at for a hibernator,” says Matthew Andrews, a molecular biologist at the University of Minnesota Duluth who studies 13-lined ground squirrels. “You bring your own lunch with you.” Packing lunch is necessary because the animals go on the world’s strictest diet during the winter, surviving entirely off their white fat. “They have their last supper in October; they don’t eat again until March,” Andrews says. Bigger fat stores mean a greater chance of surviving until spring. “If they go in really chunky, nice and roly-poly, that’s going to be a good hibernator,” he says.” What main effect do the quotations by Andrews have on the tone of the passage? They create a bleak tone, focusing on the difficulties hibernators face during the winter. They create a conversational tone, relating scientific information in everyday language. 49 Which choice best describes the structure of the first paragraph?Read the following excerpt from Andrew Carnegie’s "Wealth," originally published in Arriving penniless in Pennsylvania from Scotland in 1848, Carnegie became one of the richest people in the United States through the manufacture of steel. “The problem of our age is the proper administration of wealth, that the ties of brotherhood may still bind together the rich and poor in harmonious relationship. The conditions of human life have not only been changed, but revolutionized, within the past few hundred years. In former days there was little difference between the dwelling, dress, food, and environment of the chief and those of his retainers The contrast between the palace of the millionaire and the cottage of the laborer with us to-day measures the change which has come with civilization. This change, however, is not to be deplored, but welcomed as highly beneficial. It is well, nay, essential, for the progress of the race that the houses of some should be homes for all that is highest and best in literature and the arts, and for all the refinements of civilization, rather than that none should be so. Much better this great irregularity than universal squalor. Without wealth there can be no Maecenas.* The “good old times” were not good old times. Neither master nor servant was as well situated then as to-day. A relapse to old conditions would be disastrous to both—not the least so to him who serves—and would sweep away civilization with it. But whether the change be for good or ill, it is upon us, beyond our power to alter, and, therefore, to be accepted and made the best of. It is a waste of time to criticize the inevitable.” Which choice best describes the structure of the first paragraph? A personal history is narrated, historical examples are given, and a method is recommended. A position is stated, historical context is given, and earnest advice is given. Certain principles are stated, opposing principles are stated, and a consensus is reached. A historical period is described, and its attributes are reviewed.
