2 Literacy for Children with AutismLiteracy, the ability to read, is an important part of living a functional and independent life. For many children on the autism spectrum, learning letters and even letter sounds, is relatively easy. However, this does not typically lead to being able to sound out words or understand what they have read. Some children with autism (5-10%) have hyperlexia, meaning they can sound out letters and words without understanding them.

4 Literacy for Children with AutismChildren with autism can learn to read in a meaningful way. Often they can benefit from the same strategies used with typically developing children but some creativity is needed. A variety of strategies can be used to promote literacy even if your child is developmentally very young, has struggled with reading or seems too old to learn.

6 Literacy and Autism: PreK“Read” with your child even if they don’t show an immediate interest. - Look for books about your child’s interests i.e. animals, transportation. - Use books with different textures and sounds to capture your child’s attention - You don’t have to “read” the book. Just naming the pictures can help to increase vocabulary. Imitating sounds and movements from the story can also be helpful.

8 Literacy and Autism: PreKYou don’t have to use “books”. Words are everywhere. Point out words at the supermarket, mall, street signs, etc. If your child has trouble sitting try “acting out” a story. Focus on small goals. Even if your child is just learning to hold a book the right way for a few minutes they are moving toward literacy.

Encourage your child to do the same. Don’t rely just on flashcards and workbooks. This may help your child to “memorize” words but not really read them.

12 Literacy and Autism: Elementary SchoolIf your child is learning sight words, work on matching a corresponding picture to the word to develop comprehension i.e. matching the word “cat” to a picture of “cat”. Make reading part of your everyday routine, even on the weekends.

14 Literacy and Autism: Middle School/High SchoolIf your child has been progressing; - use visuals or help your child to make their own visuals to help them with comprehension - Provide concrete rules for spelling and grammar whenever possible. - Encourage your child to take their time and re-read texts whenever they are having trouble understanding.

The focus is on function. - Reading simple words and signs is a critical part of everyday life in grocery stores, restaurants, using public transportation, etc. - Practice when you are out in the community. Point to words and say them. Encourage your child to do the same.

18 Literacy and Autism: Middle School/High SchoolPractice at home: make mock menus with words and pictures for mealtime, have your child help you with the grocery list, put a word label on your child’s favorite items. Be patient and persistent.
