Introduction Question #1 (start using answer sheet):What do you personally love most about learning?

Let’s start off with you, the SI Leader…How do you fit into the SI Model?

SI Leaders never “wing it”:They: Prepare for their SI Sessions (using the SI Session Plan form-to be discussed later) Write test/assignment due dates, agendas, etc. on board. Plan an activity & use group learning methods in each session. Question #2: Give 1 example of why you think group learning might be preferable to learning alone.

SI Leaders are effective communicators.Want to change your SI session time or day? Ask Mrs. Pierce. Learn your SI students’ names. Learn to praise students for job well-done and provide helpful advice for improvement in areas of weakness. Any worries, problems, or concerns? Let Mrs. Pierce know. Also, let your SI instructor know if the situation involves him/her. Absences?—cc both instructor and Mrs. Pierce in EVERY single day that you’re gone.

SI Leaders Motivate! Use humor to make SI more comfortable for students. Use personal experiences— share your story. Use current events as subject topics for your session (sports, movies, news, etc.). Be a coach not a crutch! Provide inspiration and encouragement.

SI Leaders promote independent learning and share study strategies.Generate incomplete handouts where students have to use their notes to fill in the answers. Answer questions with other thought-provoking questions. Share effective study habits (memory tricks, note taking, etc.) Guide students in process of finding answers Don’t relecture the material! *Your goal is to have your students do most of the talking during your sessions—have them show you what they know and don’t know!

SI Leaders are model students.Set the example to always arrive early (5-10 min.) to SI class and session. Pay close attention during the SI class, taking notes on concepts that challenge students. Do not text during the SI class (or even give the appearance of texting!) Avoid unprofessional behaviors, such as eating during class.

Check for Understanding Section 1Select the best answer and write it on your answer sheet. 3. One way to foster independent learning in students is to: a. Provide the answer to every question the students ask. b. Re-lecture on instructor’s material. c. Encourage each student in your session to discuss course ideas as much as possible while you listen and guide. 4. Which statement is NOT an example of being a model student? a. Coming to the class or SI session late b. Showing students your own planner c. Taking notes during the SI class (esp. on areas where you observe students struggling) 5. Why should you prepare for your SI sessions? a. It will help you with your own course work. b. You will make Mrs. Pierce very happy. c. Your sessions will be more effective if you have made careful plans.

What is Active Learning?

Active Learning: one of the most important components of the SI Model ensures participants learn the course content and earn higher final course grades. SI is: an opportunity for participants to learn from one another, not a chance to attend another lecture and discover what the SI Leader knows about the subject. SI Leaders: promote active learning by ensuring they serve as a facilitator rather than a lecturer. this means the SI Leader does less talking than the students at the session

Benefits of Active LearningPromotes higher-level thinking and critical thinking skills. Participants’ learning increases. Increases retention and attendance.

Important Elements of Active Learning in SI SessionsRedirect questions to other students. Take advantage of ice breakers to create comfort for your session. Ensure all students are benefitting from your session. Work in small groups to learn the content. Avoid re-lecturing. You are a listener and a guide more than a speaker—harder to do than direct lecture. Encourage the participants to speak more than you do during session.

Check for Understanding Section 2Select the best answer and write it on your answer sheet. 6. What benefits do SI sessions provide for students? a. An opportunity to learn from other students. b. A way to attend another lecture on the same topic. c. A chance to get answers for homework and tests. 7. Which is easier to do in an SI session: tell your students everything you know on a topic OR slowly and carefully draw them out of their shells and help them explore the topic with other students in the group? Explain why.

What are the policies and expectations for you as an SI Leader in the SI Program?

SI SESSION POLICIES These policies clarify the general behaviors and expectations of SI Leaders. Please read and understand these policies prior to signing your SI Leader contract, and reference these policies as needed. These policies are not inclusive of all expectations and behaviors. Whenever specifics are not detailed, use common sense!

Cancelling Sessions What causes cancelled sessions?Main reason is…you get sick! Be sure to Mrs. Pierce and instructor…also text your regular attendees. Campus holiday Normally not acceptable to cancel a session outside of these reasons above Never cancel a session just because you think no one will come!

Changes in Session Day, Time, or LocationRequests for a different day, time, or location can be arranged by the SI Leader. Always clear it with Mrs. Pierce first and then make the change on the room schedule. After getting Mrs. Pierce’s OKAY, it is the SI Leader’s responsibility to: Inform students about any changes. Make sure the change does not increase your total weekly session hours.

Check for Understanding Section 3Select the best answer and write it on your answer sheet. 8. What are some common and acceptable reasons to cancel a session? (select all that apply) a. Session overlaps with holiday. b. You have fallen ill. c. You need to study for your own exams. d. You have an appt. at the Writing Center. 9. Once Mrs. Pierce gives you the green light to change your SI session time, what should you do next?

Your SI Session Attendance…You are required to stay entire time of SI session, even if no one shows You may work on your own personal tasks while you wait for students to arrive. You may help out the SI Assistant with any tasks related to our SI Center (if chores are available).

Attendance Circumstances…What if?Only One Student Shows: you are expected to stay entire time; you may treat your session as a one-on-one tutoring session. Participants Arrive Late: Have every participant log in/out of AccuSQL regardless of arrival time. Leader Preparedness: Have material prepared for each session to have students engaged for full 50 min. Participants may leave on their own, but you may not dismiss them early.

The SI Leader vs. SI Students

SI Leader Role The SI student is the center of the SI Session; it is the goal of the SI Leader to assist every participant with any course content and study skills. Students’ relationships with you will vary; some participants will trust you with personal information about their courses, family, and friend relationships and other personal dilemmas they may need advice on. You will be viewed as having various roles: peer mentor, instructor, upper-class student, and friend. Leaders may not always be able to cater to these roles. Leaders should know other resources are available for any need. We have a referral form for students that you think may benefit from other services on campus.

General Student InteractionsGet to know students’ names and use them. Encourage regular SI attendees to promote SI and your sessions to others in class. Emphasize your own personal SI Experiences. Explain how you benefitted from SI and how your students could benefit.

Please Do Say “YES” to students’ requests whenever they are reasonable. Remember that SI is more than simply helping participants get higher scores. You will be their mentor. Recognize the limits of your position and training. You are a recognized expert in the course and that is all you are required to be. Always listen patiently to all other problems and refer the participants to those who are experts in the field.

Please Do Attempt to treat all students as you would treat a friend.Provide direct, straightforward, & truthful responses. Refer participants to other campus resources for assistance with issues outside your expertise.

Please DO NOT: Allow yourself to drawn into arguments w/students ever.Demand an explanation or defense from a student. Ex: If students miss a session, only act concerned but never demand an explanation. Feel obligated to fix problems that participants create and can solve themselves. However, always be diplomatic when declining an invitation to get involved.

Please DO NOT: Allow yourself to become involved in assisting students w/personal issues outside your expertise. Tutor students on an individual basis outside of SI. Give your personal contact info out to participants without the advice of Mrs. Pierce.

Check for Understanding Section 5Select the best answer and write it on your answer sheet. 17. You will be viewed as mentor, peer, and as a friend to your students. _____ (True/False) 18. You should always demand answers and explanations from your students during a session. ______ (True/False) 19. If a student needs help beyond your expertise, you should refer him/her to other campus services. _____ (True/False) 20. It is always a good idea to promote Supplemental Instruction and talk about its many benefits to encourage success in your students. _______ (True/False)

The SI Leader and the InstructorYou and your SI Instructor are a team and should always work together very closely to serve the needs of students in the class.

Instructor InvolvementAt your initial instructor meeting, establish a set weekly meeting time to connect with the instructor. Part of your weekly working hours is a 30 min meeting with your SI instructor. Ask instructors to promote your SI sessions in class frequently. Speaking to the instructor frequently in front of students will show them that you have a good rapport. Make it a priority to have a close and positive working relationship with your SI instructor.

What do you discuss during your weekly meeting with your SI instructor?Ask instructor for advice on what to cover during SI sessions and also ways to cover the information Politely share with instructor any input students have given you during sessions regarding course content and structure of the class Ask instructor how you can better support him/her during class time

SI Leaders DO: Meet w/ instructors frequently.Provide feedback to instructors. Share any materials used in your sessions with your instructor. Ask instructors for permission to make short announcements in class. Be helpful to the instructor whenever possible. DO NOT BE A PAPER GRADER! This is not in your job description and kindly explain this to your instructor if asked to do this.

SI Leaders DO NOT: Attempt to go beyond material covered in course lecture. Criticize the instructor during an SI Session. This is never helpful. Always back your professor in front of your SI students. Grade papers or tests or be involved in constructing test material. Set themselves up as the primary teacher.

Important to reemphasize!!!Ask the instructor what he/she wishes you to do during lecture. Some may want you to interact with them in front of the class while others may simply want you to listen quietly.

Check for Understanding Section 6Select the best answer and write it on your answer sheet. 21. How many minutes should you meet with your professor each week? a. 30 min b. 45 min c. 1 hour 22. How does your relationship with your SI professor help to encourage students to attend your SI sessions? __________________________ 23. You should ALWAYS: (select all that apply) a. Criticize the instructor during a session. b. Grade papers or tests. c. Share information with instructor. d. Promote SI regularly in class.

Question & Answer Techniques for Your SI Sessions

Socratic Method This technique involves the SI Leader testing students’ knowledge by asking questions relevant to lectures, homework, or readings during the session. The SI Leader will choose a particular student to question and expects an answer; the Leader then continues to move on to another student if the previous student cannot answer adequately.

Wait Time—Don’t rush an answer to a question!Rather than moving on to a student who will answer the question quickly, the SI Leader gives a slower student time and waits before calling on someone else. Wait time is usually short (15 seconds). This method allows everyone to think about the question as opposed to relying on who is faster to answer every time.

Summary of Another Student’s AnswerTo promote students being engaged and actively listening during your session, frequently ask other students to summarize or provide added input to another student’s answer. Being asked to repeat another student’s answer or to add to the response allows students to be more engaged and understand the material better.

The Fish Bowl Index cards are passed around, and every student is asked to write down a question related to the course material being covered; students then deposit them into a fish bowl (or any container!). At some point during the SI session, the Leader pulls from the fish bowl and covers any topics with which students are having trouble. ???

Quiz/Test Questions Students are asked to become actively involved in creating quizzes with questions that they believe might appear on an upcoming exam. This exercise may be assigned for homework and evaluated. SI Leader or professor may then use the topics in quizzes for a review session.

Redirecting QuestionsThe most important learning opportunities during a session come when students ask the Leader questions and the Leader then directs the question to another SI student for an answer. Leaders who answer questions directly create SI sessions where participants passively listen to the SI Leader re-lecture over the material.

Redirecting QuestionsNOTE: This is more difficult than it sounds. The key is patience and being able to wait for participants to respond to the question. Teach participants to accept redirecting by: Redirecting appropriate questions. After posing or redirecting a question, always wait 15 seconds before speaking as the facilitator. Encourage students to find the answers themselves in notes and textbooks. USING HINTS is OKAY. Always try to redirect any question that another student could potentially answer.

What to Say When Redirecting a Question…Does anyone know the answer to that question? Can anyone help Mary answer that question? Can anyone find the answer to that in the notes? What do you think about that? Let's see if we can figure out how to answer it together. How would you do that? What are we trying to find out? What do we do next?

Questions of ClarificationWhat do you mean by…? Tell us more… Can you be more specific? Give an example of that please? Which words in the sentence do you not understand?

Questions to Demonstrate UnderstandingWhat do we need to solve this problem? How does this relate to…? What are we looking for? How is yours different from…?

Giving Feedback Opportunities arise in discussion of course content to provide students with feedback and direction for their learning process. Provide feedback by: Presenting an outline of a lecture and asking them why it’s a good model. Encouraging them to share examples that are particularly relevant. Encourage feedback from informal quizzes or in- class assignments to identify weaknesses.

Check for Understanding Section 7Select the best answer and write it on your answer sheet. 24. Which method has the leader asking questions from homework or past lectures and handpicking one student to answer? a. Wait Time b. Socratic Method c. Fish Bowl 25. What is a phrase you could use to redirect a question to your students? (Select all that apply) a. Does anyone know the answer to that question? b. What are we trying to find out? c. Let's me answer you the best I can… 26. What is one way you can give back feedback to a student? _________________________________________________

Advice from Experienced SI Leaders

The rewarding part about being an SI Leader…The students’ heartfelt thanks as they leave a session. Seeing students understand the material. Knowing you make a difference in someone’s education. Meeting new people-faculty, students, and other SI Leaders.

Tips for Improving SI SessionsRemember to redirect questions back to the students for them to answer. This gives students confidence in knowing the material. Circulate among students when they are working on group projects. Encourage group participation and group study. Give them more responsibility for their learning process.

Tips for Improving SI SessionsDon’t “spoon feed” any answers to your students (unless students are completely lost & highly frustrated) Allow open discussion about the material and topics. Play “devil’s advocate.” Challenge students with difficult questions . Teach your students how to ask questions of themselves, each other, and the instructor. Good questioning is an art!

Suggestions from former SI LeadersBe confident and do not feel bad if you cannot answer a question. Do not be afraid to have participants get into groups; they will learn more working together. Make participants work problems on the board! Develop a good relationship with your professor. If he/she is fully supportive, students will sense it, and you will have better attendance.

One parting piece of advice…If you experience little or no attendance at your sessions in the beginning, DO NOT GIVE UP! Keep promoting your sessions at the start of each class just like always (your instructor already knows you will be doing this). Don’t take low attendance personally…it’s not you but rather students’ lack of motivation or other issues Remain cheerful, positive, and friendly—don’t let your discouragement show—this is part of being a professional .

Short-Answer Reflection27. Which piece of advice from SI Leaders that have gone before you do you think will be most valuable to you? Why?

The First Day of the SI Class MeetingArrive to the class early. Make sure the instructor knows you are present and need to make a mini-speech about SI. (Instructors are often very distracted on the first day of the semester!) Write SI-related information on board: your name, course name, general SI location (SS- 193 area), # of hours per week of SI sessions (rule is 2 hours per section) Stand at front of class and introduce yourself-mention your background, explain what SI is, and why it’s beneficial

Important First Week Advice:In our 8 semesters running SI, we have found that students are MORE likely to come to SI if they are given a tour by the SI Leader (along with the instructor) sometime during the first week of the semester. No appointment necessary—bring your whole class and the SI instructor any time it’s convenient If I’m present, I’ll be glad to introduce myself and say a few encouraging words :=)

The First Day of the SI Class Meeting (continued)Distribute 2 forms: #1 First-Day-of-Class Survey-have students indicate their best times to attend SI sessions-collect this form back from them and use it to decide when you will hold your SI sessions. Make your own copies OR come by the SI area and obtain copies from the SI Assistant. *You will find a link to an online SI room scheduler on InsideBC, but it won’t be activated until 6 AM on Thursday, January 19. After that time, you may select the rooms/times you want for your SI sessions, but it will be on a first come, first served basis. *Be prepared for space to be scarce, as our program has been growing each semester! We will do the best we can with what resources are available to us.

The First Day of the SI Class Meeting (continued)Distribute 2 forms: #2 SI Promotional Flyer-”College is more enjoyable with SI” *Use the flyer to guide you as you give your mini-speech on the benefits of SI. *Allow students to keep this flyer and refer to it as needed in the future.

Once I know the days & times I want for my SI sessions, now what? You’ve tallied up the results of your First Day of Class Survey and know when you want to hold your 2 hours per week of SI sessions (if you’re only SI-ing for one course section) THURSDAY MORNING (Jan. 19) at 6 am, go to InsideBC, click the scheduling link (you will need to register yourself first), and select your slots.

Check for Understanding Section 8Match the questions in Column A with the right answers in Column B: Column A Column B 28. Why do I need to arrive to class extra early on the first day? A. Any details related to my SI sessions 29. What should I remember to write on the board before I introduce myself? B. Do a tally of the times that the majority of the students are available for SI sessions 30. What 2 pieces of paper do I hand out to the students? C. Because I need time to remind the professor that I need to make my SI speech to the class What do I do with the surveys after I’ve collected them back? D. The survey to find out their best times for SI sessions AND the flyer that promotes SI

Points to Remember When You ScheduleFor each course section—reserve 2 hours of SI sessions per week—consult with Mrs. Pierce if you have a unique situation. SI sessions can only start on the hour or half hour 10:00 am or at 10:30 am)—no exceptions as we are on a tight schedule! Book two consecutive 30-minute slots to equal 1 hour. Put course name as ACDV 71(ex.) 50 minutes will be used for your actual SI session Last 10 min. are used to tidy up area…erase board, push chairs in, gather up loose papers, etc.

Here’s what the scheduling app looks like:I’ve blocked off in red when rooms are completely unavailable. If you move your cursor over to this green box, you’ll see a sample reservation to guide you. The tiny green pencil can be clicked on if you want to edit your reservation. Click on the + sign at the start time for your SI session. Remember to book 2 back-to-back 30-min. slots.

After we’ve solidified our master schedule with the app…The SI Assistants will type up a schedule for each of our 7 rooms. This schedule will be posted weekly for all to reference. Changes can be made directly to these paper schedules and will be incorporated into subsequent schedules. Remember to ALWAYS check with Mrs. Pierce before making a schedule change. The Master Schedule is intended to remain more or less the same throughout the semester, though, obviously, some changes will inevitably need to be made.

Check for Understanding Section 932. How will you access the SI Scheduling App? ______________ 33. When will the app be available to you for scheduling? __________ 34. When you book your spots, what important information should you include (besides your name and the timespan)? __________________________

Frequently Asked Questions by SI Leaders

“What can I do if no one wants to go to the board to work a problem (during an SI session)?”Don’t push students to go to board until group is comfortable with one another (start 2nd week of SI) Identify someone specific to go to the board (Don’t always ask for volunteers…or you’ll get the same people every time) Send several up to board instead of individuals. Allow student(s) at board to ask the group what to write. Beware! Do not let your students convince you into working out problems for them. Give students multiple chances to use board because instructor can’t do this during regular lecture!

“What do I do if students are angry or frustrated with the instructorREMEMBER: It is never acceptable for SI Leaders to encourage or support negative comments against any instructor. Do your best to move students on to another subject and/or discuss the positive aspects of the professor. Share this information with Mrs. Pierce if necessary.

“What do I do when large numbers of students come to my SI session prior to an exam?”If you expect a large group, prepare by reserving a large room in advance (ask Mrs. Pierce). Cover the content you would normally cover—don’t feel obligated to try to “catch up” the newcomers. Remember that you can use any SI session strategies for 5  30 people. Encourage everyone to attend SI regularly for maximum benefit.

“Why is it so important for me to follow the SI model and not re-lecture to my students?”Students will learn far more when they have an opportunity to review the information on their own. Passive listening to lectures is what they’ve already done all their academic lives. Once you start lecturing and working all problems on the board for the participants, they will always expect you to do so. It will take extra dedication and energy on your part to “train” them to participate, but the long- term rewards will be incredible.

Check for Understanding Section 1035. What is one strategy you can use if no student wants to participate on the board during an SI session? 36. List one consideration to keep in mind when you expect a large group of students to attend your SI session right before an exam. 37. Select the tips that you can use to improve SI sessions: (Select all that apply.) a. Don’t “spoon feed” answers to students. b. Play “devil’s advocate.” c. Do the majority of the talking during the session. d. Never give students the answer to a question.
