Impact of Racing/Walking with KomenThe IMPACT is more than pink, a ribbon or a race. Breast cancer is a disease that affects too many lives. Komen Memphis-MidSouth is making a difference by fighting breast cancer on all fronts. The way we use donated funds is a compelling and unique part of our story because it pairs a dedication to individuals in our community with a commitment to deliver advancements in research. Funds raised here help us save lives here. The greatest part of the money we receive remains in the community as a source of help for women, men and families in need. It goes to pay for services (including screenings, assistance with treatment, education and survivor support) that benefit local women and men.

Where Do The Funds Go? 75% of all funds stay in the Memphis-MidSouth Area 25% of the funds raised go to breast cancer research Through its community grants, Komen Memphis-MidSouth is investing $402, in treatment, diagnosis, and support programs in our local communities. Since it was founded in 1993, Komen Memphis-MidSouth has invested almost $10.5 million in local breast health organizations and agencies. It is estimated that 1 million women live in the Memphis area alone. The funds Komen Memphis-MidSouth grants to community programs in our service area have made a positive difference in the lives of those living with this deadly disease. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually

Why Become a Team? Teamwork: A team gives people an opportunity to volunteer their time, talent and dollars together to make a difference in our community and have fun doing it! Support community involvement. Awards: Working together, you can accomplish great things. Make your fundraising goal reach even further. Strive to be the largest team possible, with every member raising funds. Motivation: Turn talk into action. Spread the word, ask people to donate, get screened and advocate for breast health awareness.

Building Your Team Potential team members are everywhere, and you’ll most likely find team recruitment is easy. Our community is full of people who would be happy to join you in the fight against breast cancer. Corporations, organizations, place of worship, schools, hospitals, friends, family members and neighbors can join your team. Here are some tips for recruiting new team members: Set up your company team and have a friendly competition for participation between corporate departments, family members, or schools. Publicize your team in a company or club newsletter. Customize your Race Participant Center to share a personal story and photo. friends and family a link to your team’s web page, asking them to read about your participation and consider joining your team. Host a Team Kick-Off Party where your guests can learn about the Race and join your team. Recruit co-captains to help spread the word about joining your team. Host a registration table at your work, school or place of worship. Include a link to your Participant Center on all of your social networking sites.

Building Your Team (cond’t)Post your team registration forms with your contact information around your neighborhood, your places of recreation, coffee house, medical office, etc. A Save the Date, like the below, is a great way to encourage involvement

Building Your Team (cond’t)Team Member Recruitment – Goal Setting Worksheet Setting goals will help team captains work toward increasing team members and increase fundraising. Follow the steps below to help team captains set goals for the Race for the Cure. 1. Set a Participation Goal! How many people will walk and raise funds as members of the team? Corporate Teams Determine a goal for the percentage of involvement from the employee base. On average, a company should strive to involve between 20 percent and 40 percent of its employee base. Remember, a team not only consists of employees, but also employees’ friends, family members and business associates. If you want to add to the goal to incorporate these groups, please add the number of additional participants: ______ Family and Friends Teams A team can include anyone you know (and sometimes even people you do not know) – friends, neighbors, colleagues, classmates, relatives, etc. Think about those you will ask to walk, and set a goal for the number of participants on the team: _____. Additionally, as team members are recruited, set a goal for each team member to recruit additional walkers. This will enable the team to multiply quickly! Each team member will recruit _____ additional members. Total # of Employees % of Involvement Participation Goal Example: 250 30% 75 Participants

Building Your Team (cont’d)Team Member Recruitment – Goal Setting Worksheet (cont’d) 2. Determine a Fundraising Goal for the Team Now that the team participation goal is set, determining the fundraising goal is easy! First, determine how much each participant on the team will be responsible for raising. Remember, the default suggested fundraising goal for an individual is $100. That can be achieved by something as simple as asking 10 friends for $10. We have several milestones for an individual to reach after the $250 milestone. Individuals that reach the $250 and above milestones will be eligible for prizes. There is always the goal to be on the Pink Honor Roll which consists of the top 100 individual fundraisers. Participant Goal x Fundraising Goal = Total __________ x $__________ = $_________ If the team plans to do wrap-around events or organize team fundraising activities, these can also impact the overall goal. Team Fundraising Activity Date Goal Total Goal from Team Activities $ Add the goals for participant fundraising and team fundraising together to determine the overall team goal. 3. Recruit Team Co-Captains! Team Captains don’t have to do it all alone! Some of the most successful teams recruit a Co-Captain for every 10 participants. This is especially helpful for corporate teams. Select co-captains from different divisions of the company, school or club, each with the goal of recruiting Race for the Cure participants.

Team Success Tips Lead by example: Ask: Don’t miss an opportunity:Excitement is contagious. It is crucial that your teammates see and feel your dedication and enthusiasm. Perhaps the best way to inspire your team members to raise funds is to start fundraising yourself. Ask: Ask people if they will donate. Send an to people you know encouraging them to make a pledge. In most cases, people donate their time or money simply because they were asked. Don’t miss an opportunity: Now is not the time to be shy! Let people know that you are participating in the Memphis-MidSouth Race for the Cure®. Inform everyone of your fundraising goal and let people know your purpose is to eradicate breast cancer. Make a little add up to a lot: ask 10 friends for $10

Team Success Tips (cont’d)Personalize your Participant Center. Don’t believe it makes a difference? Think again! Last year, fundraisers who updated their personal page raised on average $246 more than those who didn’t. Send s from your Participant Center. Log in to recruit and manage team members, request donations and download fundraising resources. Create s to send to people updating them on your goal. Display event materials. Raise awareness in your office, neighborhood, campus and other high traffic areas to generate new team members or donations! Please request additional race materials if you need them Ask your Human Resources department about your company’s Matching Gift program. Be sure and have each of your team members do the same. This is an easy way to double your donations at no cost to you or your donor. Komen helps you track your fundraising progress for prizes.
