5 Experience: In the StudioTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Experience: In the Studio Texas Ballet Theater (TBT) is excited to offer Fort Worth ISD students the opportunity to watch professional ballet dancers in the unique setting of TBT’s own Fort Worth rehearsal studio. The performance will run approximately 25 minutes. The dancers will appear in full costume and the students will be seated no more than 15 feet from the dancers – this is truly an “up-close” experience. 7 Experience: The Story- Act ITexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Experience: The Story- Act I The River Bank (Alice’s Dream) Alice was tired of sitting on the bank and when a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. He ran down a hole, and down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again. In Wonderland The rabbit-hole went straight then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to stop to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down. Thump! 8 Experience: The Story- Act ITexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Experience: The Story- Act I In the Forest Alice came across a caterpillar and they looked at each other for some time in silence. Suddenly a footman came running out of the wood with a round face, large eyes like a frog, and powdered hair that curled all over their heads. She began to follow them, and found herself at a tea party. The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party There was a table set out under a tree and the March Hare and the Hatter were having a tea party at it. 9 Experience: The Story- Act IITexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Experience: The Story- Act II The Queen of Hearts Garden Next, Alice came to a large rose- tree stood near the entrance of the garden. The roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red. If the Queen of Hearts found any unpainted roses, she would be very angry! The Courtroom There was a sound of many footsteps, and Alice looked around eager to see the Queen. 10 Experience: The Story- Act IITexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Experience: The Story- Act II The Courtroom –continued The Queen was angry because the King had eaten all of her tarts. “Off with his head!” she shouted. “Who cares about this?” said Alice, “You’re nothing but a pack of Cards!” At this, the Queen, the King, and the whole pack rose up in the air and came flying down upon her! The Riverbank (Alice Awakens) Suddenly, Alice woke up. “I’ve had such a curious dream!” said Alice. 11 Experience: After the BalletTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Experience: After the Ballet Texas Ballet Theater prides itself on educating young students on the art of ballet. Following the ballet, students will stand up and learn a few ballet steps and the correlating French terminology. We ask that students be prepared to remove their shoes after the completion of the ballet before being escorted onto the studio dance floor. The movement section of your visit will last about 10 minutes before students are asked to put their shoes back on. We look forward to seeing you all soon! 12 Introduction: The BalletTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Introduction: The Ballet Imagine what it would be like to watch a football game for the first time if you did not know a single thing about the game. Not only would you be confused, you probably would not enjoy it very much. The same is true of watching ballet. Ballet is a way of telling a story using music and movement instead of words. The “language” of ballet consists of patterns of movement that have developed over centuries. Ballet began as ballroom dancing in the courts of Italy and France about 450 years ago. 13 Introduction: The BalletTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Introduction: The Ballet Like all sports and forms of dance, ballet takes movements we are familiar with - running, jumping, balancing and lifting - and uses them in a very particular and formalized way. Although there are hundreds of steps and positions in any single ballet performance, each of them begins and ends with one of the five basic positions of the feet. Dancing en pointe means dancing on the tips of the toes. The first ballerina to do this was the famous dancer Marie Taglioni in 1832. To dance en pointe, dancers wear special shoes made of fabric stiffened with glue. Most girls are about 12 years old before they have enough strength and training to begin dancing en pointe. They often begin studying dance at the age of 8 or 9, or even younger. While girls learn to dance en pointe, boys who study dance must be very strong in order to perform high jumps and turns and to lift their partner in the air. As many people who aren’t professionals enjoy playing football and other sports for fun, many people, children and adults, study ballet just for enjoyment. Lynn Swann was a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers whose ballet training was well known throughout the league. His ballet training enabled him to defy gravity. If you need to leave you must be escorted by your chaperone. • Food and beverages are not allowed in the studio. Normally when watching a ballet, audience members are encouraged to be very quiet While we appreciate this, our dancers truly enjoy “oohs & aahs” and lots of clapping and cheering from students if they are seeing things that catch their attention. 22 Enrichment: Ballet adaptation- the novelTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Enrichment: Ballet adaptation- the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly known as Alice in Wonderland) was written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll (a pseudonym for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). Born in England in 1832, at age 20 he received a studentship at Christ Church Oxford and was appointed a lecturer in mathematics. He was shy but enjoyed creating stories for children. An adaptation is the adapting (changing) of a literary source (a novel, short story, poem) to another form such as a film, play, or video game. Alice in Wonderland has been adapted hundreds of times. It has been made into dozens of movies and TV shows, cartoons, comic books, and video games. It has also been performed on stage in a wide variety of art forms such as the ballet you will see and other performances in the theater such as musicals. 24 Enrichment: Ballet adaptation- ComposerTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Enrichment: Ballet adaptation- Composer A composer writes the music for a production. Joseph Horovitz is the composer for this production. Horovitz  (born 1926) is a British composer and conductor. He was born in Austria. His Jewish family emigrated to England in 1938 to escape the Nazis. He studied at Oxford and the Royal College of Music. His musical career began in He was subsequently active as a conductor of ballet and opera, and toured Europe and the United States. His works include 16 ballets, including Alice in Wonderland (1953). Stevenson, a native of Portsmouth, England, was Educated and danced in England. He continued his career here in Texas, as artistic director in Houston and since 2003 at Texas Ballet Theater. His creative and truly entertaining choreography has been delighting audiences for years. For his contributions to international dance, Mr. Stevenson was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by Queen Elizabeth II in December 1999. Draw or color a design on the front of your pocket watch and in the inside practice telling time by making your watch show a special time such as the time of the performance or your favorite time of day. 30 Project: Tea Party Role PlayTexas Ballet Theater In-Studio: Alice in Wonderland Project: Tea Party Role Play The story of Alice in Wonderland is full of magical moments where characters are able to fly, shrink or grow and even disappear completely. Have a mock tea party and assign each of your tea party elements with a magical power. For example: Tea makes you invisible Cake makes you tiny Cheese and crackers makes you a giant Toast and jam makes you slimy Water makes you fly Create cards with each of these items on them. Have students act out the tea party and one by one have them choose a tea party snack card. They should pretend to eat or drink the item and then react to the magic in this role play project.
