17 How To Study (by subject) Step 1: Compare Binder with Teacher web homework page Step 2: Follow Suggestions Below (tests are NOT open book) Step 3: Studying should begin as soon as we start a chapter or lesson Step 4: Focusing on key words / underlining is essential to success Language Arts Reread stories, discuss events and characters, and talk about the reasons why they did something and whether or not your child would do that too as well as why. Journal as you read (who you read about and what happened…refer to reflection questions). Spelling Focus on the spelling concepts, use Spellingcity.com (no password needed), write out word pyramids, give spelling pre-tests Math Use ThinkCentral online resources (especially Interactive Student Edition and Animated Math Models) Focus on the examples in the textbook lesson, chapter review/practice test (these are just like the test questions) Fast Math-weekly practice/testing, Flash cards- all operations to automaticity, Beat the Bell-school wide testing

18 How To Study (by subject) cont.Science Reread lessons as we begin a chapter, study the vocab cards by connecting the terms with words in the definition (i.e. atmosphere is a set of gases surrounding a planet), have your student describe to you the notes on their lesson booklets & later on in their outlines as these are closely connected to the test questions. Social Studies Reread lessons as we begin a chapter, study the vocab cards by connecting the terms with words in the definition (i.e. migration is the movement of people), separate vocab cards by lesson as sometimes we will have tests by lesson. Study guides are handed out when we begin the lesson. Students may start on them immediately.
