The Bread of AfflictionMaking Some Sense of Affliction in the Lives of YHWH’s People

Instructions for the 1st Passover8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in water, but roast it over the fire-- head, legs and inner parts. 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is Yahuwah's Pesach. 12 "On that same night I will pass through Mitzrayim and strike down every firstborn-- both men and animals-- and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Mitzrayim. I am Yahuwah. “haste” – trepidation, tremulous fear, alarm, or agitation; perturbation, trembling or quivering movement; tremor.

Instructions for the 1st Passover 14 "This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to Yahuwah-- a lasting ordinance. 15 For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Yisrael.

Instructions for the 1st Passover 17 "Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Mitzrayim. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.

Coming Out of Egypt 34 So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. 39 With the dough they had brought from Mitzrayim, they baked cakes of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Mitzrayim and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.

Instructions from Deuteronomy 16 Guard the month of the Aviv and celebrate the Pesach of Yahuwah your Elohim, because in the month of the Aviv he brought you out of Mitzrayim by night. 2 Sacrifice as the Pesach to Yahuwah your Elohim an animal from your flock or herd at the place Yahuwah will choose as a dwelling for his Name.

3 Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread - the bread of affliction - because you left Egypt in haste (in trepidation, trembling); so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt. Why was the unleavened bread referred to as the bread of affliction?

Affliction – Heb ynI[\ ”anee”misery, oppressed situation (HALOT) poor, afflicted, humble, meek; (BDB) The verb is used in several ways. It is used of what one does to his enemy. It describes the discomfort Sarah inflicted upon Hagar (Gen 16:6) and what the lawless do to the defenseless (Exo 22:22 [H 2I]). It speaks of the pain inflicted on Joseph's ankles by the fetters (Psa 105:18). It sets forth what Egypt did to Israel (Exo 1:11-12; this was more than slavery). In Num 24:24 and Jud it describes the physical pain brought by war. It is used for what God does to his enemies (Deut 26:6). (TWOT)

God uses affliction to prompt repentance; for example, the purpose of the wilderness wandering was to humble Israel (Deut 8:20). This is a recurrent theme in Scripture. The Exile is similarly viewed as to nature and end (Psa 102:23 [H 24]; Isa 64:12 [H 11]; Zech 10:2). God is therefore thanked for affliction (Psa 88:7 [H 8]; Psa 90:15; Psa 119:75; Lam 3:33). (TWOT)

Examples of Affliction Israel in Egypt David Job Paul Yeshua Tribulation Saints

Instructions for All Other Passover Commemorations 4 Let no yeast be found in your possession in all your land for seven days. Do not let any of the meat you sacrifice on the evening of the first day remain until morning. 5 You must not sacrifice the Passover in any town YHWH your Elohim gives you 6 except in the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name. 14 Did You Know… Yahuwah sometimes ordains affliction to discipline his people because of sin. Example: sons of Israel in Mitzrayim

Shemot/Exodus 1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. 5 The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.

6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied greatly and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them. 8 Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.

9 "Look," he said to his people, "the Israelites have become much too numerous for us. 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country."

11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly.

14 They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly.

Why Was Israel Afflicted in EgyptWhy Was Israel Afflicted in Egypt? The sons of Israel afflicted Yoseph but later when Yoseph had the upper hand, he did not take vengeance on his brothers. But Elohim did not forget. Yoseph left it up to YHWH.

Israel’s Affliction of Yoseph was a Grievous Sin Gen 37 They hated and abused and betrayed their own brother. Gen 42:21 They said to one another, "Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that's why this distress has come upon us." 22 Re'uven replied, "Didn't I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn't listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood."

Yoseph’s Affliction and Exaltation – Psalm He called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food; 17 and he sent a man before them-- Yoseph, sold as a slave. 18 They afflicted his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons, 19 till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of Yahuwah proved him true. 20 The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free. 21 He made him master of his household, ruler over all he possessed, 22 to instruct his princes as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom.

Yahuwah Punishes Sin 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “YHWH, YHWH, the compassionate and gracious Elohim, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.“ (Shemot/Exodus 34)

Did You Know… Yahuwah sometimes ordains affliction because of his law that you reap what you sow. Example: David

Galatians 6 – Sowing and Reaping 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Romans 6 – Sowing and Reaping21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Case of David 2 Samuel 11 – The trouble you get into when you are not about your business.

The Sentence Against David 10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.' 11 "This is what Yahuwah says: 'Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Yisrael.'“ (2 Samuel 12)

The Fulfillment David’s firstborn Amnon slept with Tamar, sister of Absalom Absalom had Amnon killed Absalom raised support and had himself declared king David fled but left 10 concubines, whom Absalom slept with ON THE ROOF Absalom died after getting stuck in a tree After David’s death, Adonijah had himself declared king

What Does David Write About Affliction in Psalm 119What Does David Write About Affliction in Psalm 119? 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I guard your word. 71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. 75 I know, Yahuwah, that your judgments are righteous, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me.

What Does David Write About Affliction in Psalm 119What Does David Write About Affliction in Psalm 119? 92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. 93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. 94 Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts.

What Does This Suggest About the Purpose of AfflictionWhat Does This Suggest About the Purpose of Affliction? Affliction may come because of the need for discipline for sin Yahuwah uses affliction to draw us nearer to himself Yahuwah’s faithfulness compels him to afflict us Our afflictions are not meant to destroy us

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines discipline as "training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character" or "a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity." Elohim wants to train us to walk in his ways in order to perfect our character to be like him. He does this by giving us the Instruction of his Word.

Did You Know… Yahuwah sometimes ordains affliction to test the character of his people. Example: Job

Why was Iov (Job) afflictedWhy was Iov (Job) afflicted? His friends thought he was afflicted because he had sinned.

Iov 4 - Eliphaz 7 "Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed? 8 As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it. 9 At the breath of Elohim they are destroyed; at the blast of his anger they perish.

Iov 8 - Bildad 2 "How long will you say such things? Your words are a blustering wind. 3 Does Elohim pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right? 4 When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to the penalty of their sin. 5 But if you will look to Elohim and plead with the Almighty, 6 if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place.

Iov 11 - Zophar 2 "Are all these words to go unanswered? Is this talker to be vindicated? 3 Will your idle talk reduce men to silence? Will no one rebuke you when you mock? 4 You say to Elohim, 'My beliefs are flawless and I am pure in your sight.' 5 Oh, how I wish that Elohim would speak, that he would open his lips against you 6 and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know this: Elohim has even forgotten some of your sin.

Iov 18 – Bildad Rips Into Iov Read 2-20 Conclusion: 21 Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man; such is the place of one who knows not Elohim. Zophar and Eliphaz take another round against Iov.

Why Was Iov Afflicted (chpt 2)?3 Then Yahuwah said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears Elohim and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." 4 "Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face." 6 Yahuwah said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life." 7 So Satan went out from the presence of Yahuwah and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.

Why Was Iov Afflicted? Sometimes affliction is just Abba’s way of proving our character

Did You Know… Yahuwah sometimes ordains affliction to bring himself Glory when He heals. Example: the man born blind

4th Gospel 9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth4th Gospel 9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Yahusha, "but this happened so that the work of Elohim might be displayed in his life. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

Did You Know… Yahuwah sometimes ordains affliction on behalf of others – to suffer for the sake of others Example: Yeshua

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 53 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by Elohim, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and Yahuwah has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

We are Called to Endure Affliction Colossians 1:24 Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Messiah's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the assembly.

Did You Know… Yahuwah wants us to afflict ourselvesDid You Know… Yahuwah wants us to afflict ourselves. Example: Yom Kippur Vayiqra 23:27 "The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a set apart assembly and deny (afflict) yourselves, and present an offering made to Yahuwah by fire. 28 Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before Yahuwah your Elohim. 29 Anyone who does not deny himself on that day must be cut off from his people.

Did You Know… When we afflict ourselves (fast and pray), we tap into deeper power in the Spirit. Example: Casting out the spirit in a boy

Mark 9 (KJV) 17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; 18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

Mark 9 23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Did You Know… Yahuwah sometimes ordains affliction to take his people to the next level. Example: Peter’s exhortation in his second letter

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Master Yahusha Messiah.
