Our Mission City of Hope is transforming the future of health. Every day we turn science into practical benefit. We turn hope into reality. We accomplish this through exquisite care, innovative research, and vital education focused on eliminating cancer and diabetes. We have been conducting biomedical research and treatment for almost 100 years. A common drive of research and cures for life-threatening diseases was born at City of Hope in 1913 and is still a driving force today.

Designations One of 45 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center Founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of top cancer centers that sets national standards for cancer care Ranked one of the nation’s top cancer hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for 11 years Many hospitals use the words “cancer center” in their names, but City of Hope is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, one of only 41 nationally, and is ranked as one of the nation’s top cancer hospitals by US News and World Report. The National Cancer Institute designates the Comprehensive Cancer Center title to institutions that exhibit capabilities that bridge laboratory-, clinical- and population-based research.

City of Hope’s Leadership in Cancer CareCity of Hope is a leader in patient care in California: Hematology - Highest number of patients treated Prostate cancer – Highest number of patients treated Breast cancer – Second highest number of patients treated

Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological SciencesCity of Hope’s Graduate School of Biological Sciences was established in 1994 and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Students earn a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. Established in 1994

Beckman Research InstituteCancer Research Institute Dedicated in 1952 The Beckman Research Institute (BRI) is integral in our efforts. Laboratory scientists and physicians work together to bring new therapies to patients safely, rapidly and effectively. Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. Built on Philanthropy, treated for free date? City of Hope’s basic science research program began in 1951 and was endowed by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation in City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute was the first of only five Beckman Institutes in the United States. Our scientists have achieved major advances in recombinant DNA technology, monoclonal antibodies, gene therapy and radioimmunotherapy. First of only five Beckman Research Institutes in the U.S. dedicated in 1983

Cancer Drug Development: Improving treatment through scienceUnique “bench to bedside” continuum of care, from concept to cure City of Hope has a long history of breakthroughs in the areas of recombinant DNA technology, gene therapy and monoclonal antibodies have led to many leading “smart” drugs: Avastin Herceptin Rituxin Erbitux City of Hope researchers and physicians share one goal—to facilitate a faster and more collaborative feedback loop, providing a bench-to-bedside continuum of care rarely seen at other institutions. 3 in house drug manufacturing facilities Innovative concepts move expeditiously from the laboratory to patient clinical trials, and then to market, where they benefit patients around the world. Over the course of the past few decades, this approach has led to the development of numerous cancer treatment medicines at City of Hope, improving the lives of millions of people the world over. Three on-site manufacturing facilities that enable investigators to manufacture promising new therapies more quickly than other research centers. More than 200 patents 35 novel therapies in our drug pipeline At any given time, more than 30 investigational new drug applications More than 500 collaborative projects with more than 400 institutions in 40 states and more than 30 countries Today we continue to lead the way in cancer drug development. Discovering better ways to help patients now — not years from now — is our mission. We are the first academic medical center to have an on-campus drug development facility. We now have three facilities dedicated to the manufacture of more effective drugs with less toxic side effects, which allows us to save time, money, and lives.

Clinical Trials In the U.S., about 5% of cancer patients are on a clinical trial. At City of Hope nearly 1/3 of our eligible patients are enrolled. We have over 300 open clinical trials ongoing. The Center for Biomedicine & Genetics opens, enabling City of Hope to create biologically based treatments for use in clinical trials in 3 FDA approved manufacturing facilities. Move multiple cutting-edge technologies into clinical patient studies more quickly while maintaining the high level of quality control required by the Federal Food and Drug Administration.

Innovations: Harnessing the immune response as novel cancer therapy

Why the immune system matters in cancerImmune system scours your body for foreign objects like bacteria and viruses Cancer is your own body’s cells so it does not see it as foreign, so will not kill the cells. Immune suppression reduces efficacy of chemotherapy and can lead to relapse How can we support the immune system and train it to fight cancer? What are the immune cells? What do they do in layman’s terms, fight infection, look for foreign bodies, like viruses or bacteria. Since cancer is your own body’s cells, the immune system does not see them as foreign.

Dramatic Advances in Breast Cancer TreatmentPrecision medicine, improved screening, refined surgical techniques, better understanding of subtypes

Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Ovarian CancerDelivering chemotherapy directly to the abdomen in women with advanced ovarian cancer is part of an effective treatment regimen that’s too little used. The technique, known as intraperitoneal, or IP, chemotherapy, has been linked to extended survival when delivered with traditional intravenous, or IV, chemotherapy. City of Hope experts are well-versed in the regimen and offer IP chemotherapy to appropriate patients.

Cancer Screening and PreventionKey indicators of genetic risk: Cancer occurs at a much younger age than average Cancer occurs in several close relatives More than one type of cancer occurs in the same close relative Cancer occurs in paired organs (i.e. cancer in both breasts) Cancer occurs in more than one generation Several rare cancers occur in a family

Risky Behaviors – Cancer CulpritsNot all factors have the same impact on cancer risk and can vary by age, gender, race etc.

California Teachers StudyIn 2005, 133,000 teachers in CA were asked to fill out a 16 page health survey 141 scientific research papers in the past 20 years, 133,000 filled out a 16 page questionaire and have been followed every year for healthy changes, now 30,000 women have been asked to give small blood samples

California Teachers StudyAll women in CA CA Teachers Study Participants Increase in Breast, Colon, Endometrial, Lymphoma, Melanoma etc. Concluded obesity tied to diabetes

What can we do? How can we be proactive?

The Power of SuperfoodsPomegranates, blueberries, mushrooms, cinnamon, grape seed extract are all being studied for their anti-cancer properties Vitamins Anti-oxidants Food can be healing

Improving your nutritional habitsEat a Rainbow! Lots of different color fruits and veggies, dark green vegetables are especially nutrient dense. Eat seafood in place of meat two times a week. Fatty fish like salmon and trout are high in omega 3 fatty acids. Avoid refined sugars Add fiber to your diet Drink green tea

Exercise as preventative medicineModerate to high-intensity bone-strengthening exercises two or more days a week. Even a few hours of exercise a week can lower your risk of cancer. Take the stairs, take the dog for a walk, get a fitbit to compete with friends

Happiness and Health Those who demonstrate happiness as a predominant mood show… Lower risk of heart disease Lower blood pressure Healthier body weight Being less impacted by everyday stressors Stronger ability to deflect stress Boehm and Kubzansky (2012)

The Power of Philanthropy to Heal

Where are we headed?
