2 Overview of the Past In Spanish 1, we learned one verb tense (the present) and its irregular verbs that don’t fit the usual pattern of conjugation. Spanish has two ways to talk about things that happened in the past.

3 If you want to talk about things that you always did when you were younger, your childhood, or things you usually did, you use the IMPERFECT. To talk about things you did at a specific time in the past, you need the PRETERITE.
