 Scientific excellence is the sole selection criterion  Projects in all fields of research are eligible for funding  Individual research teams led by a single PI are supported  Significant funding is provided to attract the established and next generation of exceptional research leaders  Grants are awarded to the host institution that engages the PI  The host institution guarantees the PI’s independence and provides the research environment to carry out the project and manage its funding

1.Research at the frontiers of knowledge 2. Research in all scientific and technological areas 3. Support group of highly talented individual through a European competition 4. Simplified and flexible funding of up to 5 years duration 5. Community funding 100% 6. Specific implementation structure (Executive Agency) 7. Governed independently: Scientific Council (Scientific Council) 22 members 8. Budget: > 1,600 million euros a year (2013-2020: ~ 12,000 million euros)

Proposals submitted after publication of calls Procedure for submission of proposals by 1 shipping. Evaluation process in two stages based on panels. Individual research groups: - directed by a single "principal investigator“ - of any nationality - can include additional team members Teams may be national or transnational

 Research teams headed by a single Principal Investigator (PI) of any nationality and, if necessary, include additional team members.  The PI does not necessarily need to be employed by the host institution at the time when the proposal is submitted.  If not already employed by the host institution, the PI must be engaged by the latter at least for the duration of the grant.  Devote a significant amount of time to the project. It should represent the PI's main workload,

Restrictions on applications A PI may submit only one proposal for ERC frontier research grant calls made under the same Work Programme. A PI who submitted a proposal to 2013 ERC may not apply to 2014 ERC for any ERC frontier research grant if he was evaluated in category C. However, a PI who submitted a proposal to the 2013 Synergy Grant may apply to the 2014 Starting, Consolidator or Advanced Grants even if he was evaluated in category C. - NEW rules for two year period. A PI can hold only one frontier research grant from the ERC at any one time. A PI who holds an ERC frontier research grant cannot submit a proposal for another ERC Grant unless the existing grant expires no more than two years after the call deadline. A PI serving as Panel Member for 2014 ERC or who served as a Panel Member for 2012 ERC may not apply to a 2014 ERC call for the same type of grant.
