International Economics

What we’re working on Innovation and trade. Knowledge flows and trade.Does trade policy affect firms’ incentives to innovate? E.g. WTO. Important to understand the how technological progress depends on policy. Currently studying the (global) universe of patents, over several decades PATSTAT Knowledge flows and trade. We think that knowledge flows (imperfectly) between countries Absorption may depend on trade as well Business partners abroad, face-to-face meetings etc. Can measure knowledge flows by citations in patent data. Immigration and structural change. Huge immigration shock in Norway 2004-today. Share of foreign born in population almost doubled from 7% to 13%. How does immigration affect industrial structure? ..growth? Not obvious if immigrant workers & capital are substitutes.

What you can work on Help us in any of the projects above.Or work on any topic (weakly) related to international econ: Trade agreements. E.g. controversy over TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership). Impact on trade and welfare. Trade and inequality. And more In practice: Find a country/time frame with a large shock (RTA, China competition, etc). Gather data on trade, wages, employment, +++

IN SUM: Lots of exciting research possibilities. Lots of dataInternational cross country/industry data. Micro data from Norway (firm level, buyer-seller ++) .. And very engaged advisors.. Andreas Moxnes ES 11th floor Karen Helene Ulltveit-Moe Thanks!

Master thesis project suggestions Jon StrandPrimary thematic areas: Environmental, resource, climate and energy economics Secondary areas: Transport economics, health economics, urban economics. Project 1: Anaysis of factors behind carbon emissions based on data the World Resources Institute, from 1850 for more than 100 countries. Also, greenhouse gas emissions for 163 countries for a shorter period. These data are available but need to be expanded.

Master thesis project suggestions Jon Strand (cont.)Project 2: Proposed stated-preference survey in Norway to elicit willingness to pay to protect Amazon rainforests. (This work might be collaborative with NMBU. The project requires collecting the relevant data.) Project 3: Measuring externality costs in road traffic in major urban areas in Latin America. (Objective of this project is to calculate deadweight losses in that region, associated with excessive and inefficiently regulated road traffic; and suggest measures for improvement.)

Public economics is an important and lively research fieldThe centre (OFS) established in 2013 Collaboration between Econ dep, Statistics Norway and Frisch centre Promote teaching and research in public economics OFS Scholarships OFS offers 4 scholarships (15000) Supervision by OFS affiliates Vidar Christansen, Gaute Torsvik, Thor O. Thoresen.

Example of previous OFS thesis

OFS scholarships spring 2017Andreas Økland: “Effects on Property Taxes on House Prices” Cathrine Sørensen: “Efficiency Effects of Different VAT Regimes” Boyd Oyier: “A Parametric Approach to Evaluating the Effects of Tax Policy Changes on Income Inequality in Norway, ”  Andreas Haga Raavand: “Evolution of the Labor Supply Behavior of Norwegian Women ( )”

CREE – Frisch, the Department and Statistics NorwayRadical emissions reductions in ETS sectors (Leaders: Nils-Henrik von der Fehr, University of Oslo, and Snorre Kverndokk, Frisch Centre) Environmentally friendly transport (Leader: Mads Greaker, Statistics Norway) Green regulations and utilization of smart energy users (Leader: Bente Halvorsen, Statistics Norway) Towards the low-emission society (Leader: Taran Fæhn, Statistics Norway).

Research questions: How can we accommodate rapidly increasing shares of intermittent energy sources (solar, wind) in the power mix? How can electric vehicle owners be motivated and incentivized to provide back-up power capacity when their car is not in use? What types of technological, behavioral and infrastructure barriers exist for low- or zero-emission technology in commercial road transport? What are the greatest barriers for not achieving the full energy savings potential? Why has the CCS technology not been implemented, and which policy instruments are available to raise adoption of this technology? How can we design efficient support schemes for green R&D for instance more use of innovation prizes? Is there a conflict between short-run abatement considerations and long-run transformation of society towards low emissions? To what extent is climate policy troubled by time inconsistency and commitment problems, and what can be done about it? (Is for instance the proposal to have a climate law one step in the right direction?)
