Three Things Sin Will Do!These three things can be seen in David’s sin, but: David’s faith in God conquered Goliath… 1 Samuel 17 David described by God as a “man after mine own heart” 1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22-23 David had various challenges in life… Pride – 1 Chronicles 21 - numbered the people Overcame Fear – 1 Samuel 17 – When he faced Goliath Anxiety – His future was uncertain as a soldier Revenge – He had two opportunities to kill Saul but did not Lust – Lost this battle Spiritual Blindness – Lost this battle, but repented Despair – Over the death of his child and his son Absalom Now, three things sin did to David… 1 Sam 13:14 - Samuel told Saul - But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. 6 It Will Take You Farther Than You Wanted Or Intended To Go!Consider David’s Sin With Bathsheba Started with a look & being in the wrong place! 2 Samuel 11:2-4 Matthew 5:27-28 James 1:12-15 Addiction to drugs, gambling, alcohol, pornography have a starting place - The first exposure to them! Most do not consider the possible consequences Sin comes as a packaged deal leading to other sins We don’t know what “surprises” are in the package! The FIRST Thing Sin Will Do! 2 Sam. 11:2-4 - READ Matt. 5: Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. James 1: Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

It Will Keep You Longer Than You Wanted To Stay!David was a wise man! No thought of the consequences of his sin! Same is true today regarding sin It entangles and will keep you! Romans 6:11-14, 16-17 Parable of the sower – Luke 8:4-8; 11-15 Hebrews 3:13 Paul warned to… Flee fornication – 1 Corinthians 6:18 Joseph fled the advances of Potiphar’s wife Genesis 39:7-12 The SECOND Thing Sin Will Do! Rom. 6:11-14, See Introduction Luke 8:4-8; READ & Comment Heb. 3:13 - But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 1 Cor. 6:18 - Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. Gen. 39:7-12 Especially vs There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"

Barnes On the Deceitfulness of Sin“Sin is always deceitful. It promises more than it performs. It assures us of pleasure which it never imparts. It leads us on beyond what was supposed when we began to indulge in it. The man who commits sin is always under a delusion; and sin, if he indulges it, will lead him on from one step to another, until the heart becomes entirely hardened. Sin puts on plausible appearances and pretences; it assumes the name of virtue; it offers excuses and palliations, until the victim is snared; and then, spell-bound, he is hurried on to every excess. If sin was always seen in its true aspect when man is tempted to commit it, it would be so hateful that he would flee from it with the utmost abhorrence.”

It will Cost You More Than You Willing To Pay!Nathan tells David the consequences to come! 2 Samuel 12:9-23 “The sword will never depart…thine house” – vs. 10 “I will rise up evil…out of thine own house” – vs Amnon forced Tamar – 2 Samuel 13:1-20 Absalom arranged Amnon’s death – 2 Samuel 13:21-32 Absalom violated his fathers concubines – 2 Samuel 16:20-23 cf. 2 Samuel 12:11-12 Absalom rebels and eventually is killed in battle – 2 Samuel 18:9-18 David mourns Absalom’s death – 2 Samuel 18:19-33 Adonijah tried to exalt himself and become king and lost his life for asking for Abishag for his wife – 1 Kings 1-2 David’s sin of adultery was forgiven by God 2 Samuel 12:13 God assured David that he would not die! But, God did not remove the consequences! The child he fathered with Bathsheba died – 2 Samuel 12:14-25 The THIRD Thing Sin Will Do! He asked Bathsheba to ask for him because he was playing a high stakes game of political intrigue and he thought that by using Bathsheba he would perhaps be able to outwit Solomon and keep himself out of danger; perhaps he thought that Solomon would be weak enough to grant his request to his mother, when he knew he would not grant it directly to him—he was acting deceitfully. Solomon realised what had happened, i.e. that he was trying to get the kingship by devious means“. This is what Kiel and Delitzsch have to say about Adonijah’s plan: Abishag had been only David's nurse, in the eyes of the people she passed as his concubine; and among the Israelites, just as with the ancient Persians, taking possession of the harem of a deceased king was equivalent to establishment of the claim to the throne (see at 2 Sam. xii: 8 and 2 Sam. iii:7, 8)" (Kiel and Delitzsch, Commentary on 1 Kings, p. 32). As Nathan foretold to him, so a world of mischief and misery fell out to him for this one presumptuous act: his daughter defiled by her brother; that brother slain by another brother; a strong conspiracy raised against him by his own son; his concubines openly defiled by the same son; himself afflicted by the untimely death of that son, who was his darling; reviled and cursed to his face by a base unworthy companion; besides many other affronts, troubles, and vexations. So truly David felt, by sad experience, what woe is brought on by presumptuous sin. Bp. Sanderson.

Conclusion Some say “it can’t happen to me”!But, heed the warning of Paul… “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” – 1 Corinthains10:13 But, what about brethren who… “Dabble” in the lottery? Smoke and use tobacco products? Dress immodestly, causing others to lust? Are in an unscriptural marriage? Drink alcoholic beverages “socially”? Look at pornographic material? Bundy said in his eleventh hour interview with Dr. James Dobson, “Pornography can reach out and snatch a kid out of any house today It snatched me out of my home 20, 30 years ago ... There is no protection against the kind of influences that are loose in society.” He also stated, “What alcohol did in conjunction with, let’s say, my exposure to pornography, was alcohol reduced my inhibitions; at the same time the fantasy life that was fueled by pornography eroded them further.”5 - From - “Fatal Addiction,” Ted Bundy’s Final Interview with Dr. James Dobson (Video Tape). Ted Bundy was executed in the electric chair at Starke State prison, Florida, on January 24th, at 7 a.m., 1989. Gal. 5: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

“…Be not deceived…” Heed These Words…“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night” Psalms 1:1-2 “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. 15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away” Proverbs 4:14-15 “…Be not deceived…” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
