General Transportation CourseEngineering Modern Mass Transportation Systems – Light Rail – Rapid Transit – Commuter Rail

Mass Transportation SystemsOffered Every Year and now changing to every other Year General Course with multiple speakers to give an overview of the various components that go into the Engineering of a system! Good general course for project managers and project engineers involved in the design of transit systems

Course Titles The following is a listing of the various chapters that are covered in this course: Introduction to Light Rail Transit – a brief description of the components to Light Rail Systems Planning and Managing FTA Funded Rail Transit Projects – an overview of the work involved in getting grants, working with the new funding paperwork and procedures for various projects

Course Titles Transit Railroad Engineering – This course is centered on the designing of the track structure system which includes: sub-grade, ballast, drainage, track alignment, etc. Transit Yard Facility Design Factors – This discussion; uses real-life projects to demonstrate the various requirements for a facility and the possible track layouts to handle all of the vehicle requiremnets

Course Titles Rail – Highway Crossings – This course uses the general requirements of the various federal standards for the placement and the protection of the rail crossings Operation and Purpose of Signal Systems – This course discusses the reasons for the installation of a signal system(s), the various types of systems used in all of the various rail systems, what is on the horizon for the future!

Course Titles Traction Power Systems – This course presents the various options for providing power and delivering it to the vehicles, includes AC, DC, and Third Rail Systems Construction, Contracting and Equipment – This course discusses from a rail construction perspective the process for contracting, overseeing, and building the rail structure using real-life project, and discussing possible pit-falls in construction

Course Titles Transit Noise and Vibration – this course covers the various types of noise and vibrations that will be generated by the transit system being built. This includes diesel engine noise, rail squeal, night time maintenance, etc.

Lastly Some of these maybe revised due to some recent retirements, but the intent is help project managers and engineers to understand the various components that need to be considered; taken into account when trying to plan, design, construct, and operate a transit system.

Second Course Fundamentals of Traction Power System and Overhead Contact System

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsIntroduction to Electrified Transportation Systems – This is a broad overview of the various types of electrified transit systems, we also discuss preliminary planning processes

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsIntroduction to OCS Design – This is a broad review of the various possible development of electrified transit systems, such as a new system, an extension to an existing system, or the up-grade to an existing system. Also this is interlaced with a bunch of definitions for terms used in our business

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsDC Traction Power Substation Design – This is a presentation of the various components of DC substations, we also discuss designs for rectifier transformers, AC and DC Switchgear, DC Circuit Breakers DC Traction Power Grounding – This is an overview of equipment grounding, and system grounding

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsOCS Construction – This is a presentation of the way OCS Systems maybe constructed with a stress on the equipment, and the storage or staging yards that might be required for the project. Traction Power Load Flow Simulation – This presentation is a discussion of the modeling process to include the vehicle and the delivery system(s)

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsOCS Operation – This is a presentation of the way OCS Systems react to the current collector and any added equipment, such as splices and section insulators DC Traction Power Distribution System Design – This is a presentation of the way TP Distribution Systems maybe constructed with various components such as Conductors, Cables, Ductbanks, Contact Rails, etc

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsOCS Maintenance – This is a presentation of the various elements of the OCS Systems needing checking, cleaning, adjusting, etc. AC Traction Power System Design – This is a presentation of the way AC Traction Power Systems maybe designed with a stress on possible standards, older systems built before standards, and the different electrified systems

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsTPSS Inspection and Maintenance – This is a presentation of the possible items to be checked and maintained and possible intervals to help schedule and balance the various shifts work load.

Fundamentals of TPS & OCS SystemsOther Topics in OCS – This segment was assembled to stress the various interfaces the OCS may have to internal and external project items, corrosion control, design criteria, affects on OCS Designs, project savings, etc.
