Wairarapa College Sports Foundation
My connection to Wairarapa College and why so I’m committed to sport at this school……..
OUR MISSION STATEMENT To provide financial & administrative support to all Wairarapa College Sports teams, individuals, coaches, managers & administrators in order to develop & maintain the highest level of sporting opportunities & standards
A bit about us ……. The foundation was formed in 2014 & we operate as a Charitable Trust We are a team of parents & staff who are very passionate & committed to sport at Wai Col Our philosophy is simple – No coaches, managers & administrators – NO TEAMS Our aim is to become totally self-sufficient & self-funded To support all sports & individual sports persons to the best of our financial ability We took over the challenging role of applying for grant applications for all sports
Our committee members…….We have a fantastic mix of staff & parents on the foundation committee Parents are: Garry Smith, Lea Griffith, Peter Semmens, Kay Pankhurst & Pam Blackburn Staff members are: Mike Van Woerkom, Mike Geenty, Dani Cottle – College Hostel Manager The new sports co-ordinator There’s a bunch of parents that are keen to see what we’re about and are attending our next meeting, Rachel Dillimore, Chris Anstis, Clare Ferrick & Donna Hintz.
How we got started….. In 2014, Trust House donated $20k to get the foundation off the ground We used these funds to support the senior 1st teams financially, helping to fund the Winter Sports week where many teams had to travel throughout NZ We provided our volunteers with warm jackets for the side-line & purchased some new uniforms Developed an annual pre-season sports tournament hosting teams from around NZ, raising money for the foundation. The hostel benefits financially from teams staying at the school
How we got started….. We have established our own website & Facebook page, keeping everyone informed of match draws, results & achievements of our teams Hold an annual coaches, managers & administrators sports award evening as a way of saying thanks to all their work throughout the year. We purchased numerous trophies for this event. Set up “Coach the Coaches” sessions with individuals who specialise in sport
And just lately…... Trust House donated a further $16k to enable us to purchase 2 vans! They will be hired out (at a bargain price) to the school for sports trips, school trips & more, saving the school & parents thousands each year having to hire buses & other vans. They are valued at over $60k, so we have borrowed $44k from WBS. The loan will be repaid over 4 years. Loan repayments, insurance & other costs will be covered from the van hireage & committed donations from sponsors We are looking for at least 2-4 more sponsors for our new vans. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or business connections we can get in touch with
Some more exciting news…...We’ve just had success gaining a $22k grant from Eastern & Central to upgrade the cricket nets at Wai Col! The school cricket teams helped fundraised a further $8k – brilliant effort There is a huge lack of decent cricket training facilities in Masterton. Our upgraded nets will be so awesome, we’ll be able to rent them to other clubs & schools providing income for maintenance Plus, Prime donated $2,000 towards the winter sports tournament held earlier this year
So what’s next…... We’re in the process of collating a database of as many ex-Wai Col students as possible. We have many uses for this valuable information as in time, we will be asking these people to consider making financial donations to the school – but that’s not all…. We have an abundance of ideas we want to achieve. Like – implementing year 8 sport academy programmes so they can get a taste of sport at Wai Col before deciding on what college they will attend Have meet & greet sessions - a way to say thanks to past students and to inspire our up and coming players. Plus keeping past students up to date on match draws, results & achievements – encouraging them to watch our current students playing sport
So what’s next…... We will always need extra money to help supply equipment and training aids for all our sporting teams It won’t be long & Wai Col will be celebrating 100 years – now we certainly need past student s to organise this huge event Other ideas – purchasing wood splitters with trailers. This will enable students to fundraise for their teams. Many grants are declined due to the lack of fundraising contributions We are looking at purchasing a commercial bbq for fundraising. How many people attend sporting events and want a feed? Money for jam!
Sports tournament - how can you help...Continue to support our annual sports tournament held in April during the school holidays. Entries are already out for the 2017 tournament This event has the potential to raise over $20k. Now we have 2 years under our belts, we have fine tuned this event, making it a huge success If you come across any marketing or promotional opportunities, please mention this tournament or let us know & we’ll get in touch with your contacts We can print flyers for you to hand out at other tournaments your teams may attend throughout the year
To sum up……. Give us feedback & suggestions as we are always looking for new ideas! We strive to achieve the best practice for all our goals Help spread the word about our database & encourage people to send us their information. See our Facebook page for more details We work in partnership with all sporting codes of the school, head of sports, sports co-ordinators, teachers & students
To sum up……. We’re also here to help you. We have committee members that have expertise in many areas and are happy to share their knowledge If you would like to join the foundation, please feel free to come along to one of our meetings – we’d love to see you there! Thanks for your time. Please feel free to ask any questions
