4 Reformation 2017: The Good News of a Good ShepherdDuring the months of September, October and November, we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by asking a simple question: Is the Reformation still significant, 500 years later? So far we have seen that the Reformation's significance is in the re-discovery of the ETERNAL GOSPEL at a time when many people, and many churches had forgotten it. The re-discovery of the Gospel begins with a clear understanding of the Law.

5 Reformation 2017: The Good News of a Good ShepherdOnly when we understand that God is perfect and we are hopeless sinners apart from Christ, can we fully appreciate the Gospel. But when we feel the full burden of our condemnation by God's Law, and the fear of God which accompanies our condemnation, then God is quick to come to us with the Good News of our Good Shepherd.

6 Reformation 2017: The Good News of a Good ShepherdToday we focus on the forgiveness, freedom and peace that comes because our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, laid down His life for us and took it back up so that we would be children of God, now and forever.

17 CONFESSION & FORGIVENESSP: If we say we have not sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (silence for personal confession)

18 P Most merciful God, C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. But for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen

Today we pray that you would fill us with the absolute peace and comfort of the Gospel. Give us confidence and joy so that we would, with Your help, live repentant lives as Your forgiven people.
